International joint ventures can have different learning or capability building pattern from that of businesses which entered foreign markets independently or local businesses. The paper showed that successful capability building is possible for a local partner of joint venture by combining the knowledge transferred from its foreign partner with existing resources based on appropriate learning ability(absorptive capacity) and combinative capability. It also showed that capability building by international joint ventures have a similar pattern with that of dynamic capability building. International joint ventures in the early stage do not have sufficient resources or capabilities needed to succeed in the local markets, but those with learning ability can build capabilities quickly through such means as knowledge transfer from foreign partners, external strategic alliance and learning by trial and error. It was also recognized that these means of capability building gradually changed with the growth of the joint ventures and maturation of relevant markets. The paper examined the capability building process through the case of Dongsuh Food, the Korean joint venture of General Foods, a leading food company in the U.S., from 1970 when the joint venture contract was concluded up to today. In particular, an in-depth study was made on the technology development, acquisition of marketing capability and development of new products based on these capabilities. Finally, research propositions were drawn from the results of the study.

국제합작투자기업은 단독으로 해외에 진출한 기업이나 현지의 기업과는 다른 학습 혹은 역량축적 패턴을 가질 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 국제합작투자기업의 역량 축적이 동적역량축적과 유사한 패턴을 보이며, 해외합작파트너로부터 이전받은 지식을 현지파트너가 가진 적절한 학습능력(흡수능력)과 결합능력(combinative capability)을 통해 기존의 자원 기반과 결합하게 되면 성공적인 역량 축적이 가능함을 밝혔다. 합작회사도 설립 초기에는 현지시장에서 성공하기 위해 필요한 자원이나 역량이 부족하나, 학습능력을 가진 경우 본사로부터의 지식 이전, 외부 와의 전략적제휴, 시행착오를 통한 학습 등의 방법을 통해 신속한 역량축적이 가능하다. 그리고 이러한 역량 축적의 방법은 기업이 성장하고 해당 시장이 성숙함에 따라 다소 변화하는 모습을 보인다. 본 연구는, 미국의 대표적 식품회사인 제너럴푸즈의 한국 합작법인인 동서식품을 대상으로 사례연구를 하여, 합작계약이 이루어진 1970년부터 최근까지의 역량축적 과정을 살펴보았다. 특히 기술개발, 마케팅역량 습득과 이를 통한 신제품 개발 과정을 심도 깊게 살펴보고, 연구 명제들을 도출하였다.
