This study analyzed how to reproduce the visual expression of picture books dealing with death and how to deliver meanings on the basis of the domestic books and translated books dealing with death which have been published over the last ten years. As a study method, an analytic framework was compiled and applied on the basis of the discussion of visual factors constituting a visual message. As a result, domestic books reproduced death as the course of remembering and grieving over death of parents. In the books, death was emphasized with the symbols of natural factors, horizontal arrangement, static gestures, achromatic colors, and low chroma tone. Symbolic factors reflected provision of nature and oriental vies of life and death, and a narrative was developed on the basis of the deceased, rather than children. In translated books, death was viewed as a personal issue, and a narrative was developed on the basis of a child’s emotions and his or her course of overcoming the emotions. In the books, such patterns as symbolism of objects or individual factors, personal and social space, dynamic behavior, mixed structure, and high chroma colors were emphasized. The analysis results reveal that the different western and oriental values of death influenced visual delivery factors which reflected different social consciousness and generated different meanings. It has an educational meaning in the point that it is possible to recognize social and cultural differences of death and to expand the view of value of negative themes.

본 연구는 최근 10년간 출간된 국내 창작서와 해외 번역서의 사례를 중심으로 죽음을 다루는 그림책의 시각화 양상이 어떻게 재현되었으며 의미를 전달하는 지를 비교, 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 시각적 전언을 구성하는 시각요소들에 대한 논의를 중심으로 유형을 정리하여 분석틀을 적용하였다. 죽음의 애도과정에 따 른 시각적 전달 요소들의 양상을 분석하면 다음과 같 다. 국내 그림책 사례에서 죽음은 죽은 부모에 대한 추모와 애도의 과정으로 재현되었다. 이는 자연요소의 상징, 자연의 공간적 배경, 수평적이고 선형적 배치, 정적인 제스처, 무채색과 저채도 톤으로 강조되었다. 상징 요소들은 자연의 순리, 생과 사에 대한 동양적 가치관을 반영하며 사자(死者)를 중심으로 서사가 전 개되었다. 반면 해외 그림책 사례에서는 죽음을 개인 적인 문제로 바라보고 이에 대한 아동의 감정과 극복 과정을 중심으로 서사가 전개되었다. 이는 사물이나 개인적 요소의 상징성, 개인 및 사회적 공간, 동적 행 위, 혼합적 구도, 고채도 색채의 강조 등의 양상으로 나타났다. 이러한 시각적 양상에 따라 동서양에서 죽음에 대 한 가치관과 사회적 인식이 각각의 시각적 전달 요소 들에 반영되어 의미를 생성하는 것을 알 수 있다. 이 는 그림책의 이미지에 반영된 죽음에 대한 사회적, 문 화적 차이를 인식하고 부정적인 주제에 대한 가치관을 다양하게 확장할 수 있다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 있다.
