This article aims at suggesting a direction to pursue for the liberal arts education community. There are signs of era that can trigger normalization of liberal arts education at the beginning of new era. The effect of the government’s financial support project, which has been under way for more than two decades, has raised awareness of liberal arts education at the site, with a number of liberal arts institutes receiving stable support from the National Research Foundation. The basic competency diagnosis items of the third period are expected to provide chances for the normalization of liberal arts education by accepting much of the liberal arts education community. Reading these signs, the article suggests establishment of liberal arts education as a discipline and its sub-fields, calls for efforts to internationalize the liberal arts education community, and urges reflection within the liberal arts education community under the name of Faculty Development.

교양기초교육의 정상화 과정에 긍정적으로 기여할 것으로 보이는 징후가 나타나 고 있다. 지난 20여년 진행되어 온 정부재정지원사업의 효과가 일부나마 현장의 교양기초교육에 대한 인식을 제고해 주었으며, 다수의 교양기초교육 연구소가 한 국연구재단의 안정적인 지원을 받게 되었다. 제3주기 대학기본역량 진단 항목은 교양기초교육계의 의견을 상당부분 수용함으로써 교양기초교육의 정상화 계기를 제공하리라 기대된다. 이 글은 이러한 시대적 징후를 읽어내면서 교양교육‘학’의 정립과 하위분야를 제안하고, 교양교육학계의 국제화 노력을 촉구하며 교양기초교 육계 내부의 성찰, 특히 교양기초교육 전담ㆍ담당 교ㆍ강사의 상호이해와 성찰을 교수개발(Faculty Development)의 이름으로 진행하기를 촉구한다.
