This research primarily aims to reveal the nature of stigma confronting unwed mothers in Korea through the process of creating an ethnodrama. In this process, participants were carefully recruited and the research data were collected through individual and focus group interviews. Along with interview transcripts, field notes and reflective journals made during these interviews were also taken into consideration during the data analysis. Through thematic analysis process, this research delved into accounts of Korean unwed mothers through several cycles of different coding methods in order to understand the nature of stigma to which these women are subjected and to best capture the essence of their narratives. Five themes of stigma emerged from this process: (1) Unilateral, irresponsible abandonment, (2) Invisible member of the family, (3) The 21st century obscene neo-leper, (4) Handed-down scarlet letters, and (5) Systematic outcast. The culminating result of this research is an ethnodrama Unveil the Invisible in which these women’s narratives are carefully woven around those five themes, bringing them to a conscious level where one can understand better of their experiences, by whom they are stigmatized, and how they think and feel. Gaining knowledge into the power dynamics and modality of discrimination against these mothers is an important finding of this research. The ethnodrama Unveil the Invisible recounts these women’s stories as candidly and directly as possible and encourages to reevaluate existing prejudice against these mothers.

이 연구는 에스노드라마(ethnodrama)를 매개로, 한국 미혼모들의 낙인의 경험을 밝히고 전달하는데 의 의를 가지는 질적 연구이다. 연구과정에서, 신중하게 모집, 선발된 참가자들과의 개인 및 집단 인터뷰를 통해 연구 기록들이 수집되었으며, 이 인터뷰 기록들은 현장 노트와 성찰적 저널과 함께 여러 번의 걸친 다양한 코딩 방법을 통해 분석되었다. 이러한 분석과정을 통하여, (1) 일방적이고 무책임한 버려짐 (2) 가 족 내에서 투명 인간 같은 존재 (3) 21세기 음란한 신 나병환자 (4) 대물림 되는 주홍 글씨 (5) 제도적으로 버려진 왕따 라는 참여자들의 경험에서 공통적으로 나타나는 다섯 가지 주제들이 추출되었다. 이 연구의 최종결과물인 에스노드라마 (제목: Unveil the Invisible)는 위 각 주제들을 중심으로 한국 미혼모들의 어떤 낙인을 경험하는지, 누구에 의해 그러한 낙인이 일어나는지, 또한 그들이 어떠한 생각과 감정을 가졌는지 에 대해 더 잘 이해할 수 있도록 구성되었다. 이 연구의 또 다른 중요한 연구 결과는 한국 미혼모들에 대한 차별이 일어나는 양상과 그들 주변 관계에서 존재하는 권력의 역학관계에 대한 이해를 높이는 것이다. 이 연구는 에스노드라마 라는 매개를 통하여 한국 미혼모들의 경험을 최대한 있는 그대로, 직접적으로 전달 하고 있으며, 한국 미혼모들에 대한 기존의 존재하는 편견을 다시 재평가할 수 있도록 돕는다.
