This thesis amended and supplemented the ideological value and prospect of Hwaseo School's independence movement in Korea and China , the presentation of the field of philosophy, under the theme of “Humanistic values and prospects of independence movement in Korea and China during the Japanese colonial era”, the theme of the 45th International Academic Conference of the Korean and Chinese Association of Humanities Hwaseo School agonized about the spirit of the times with Hwaseo Lee Hangno as the center and studied and discussed theories of people's mind, the problem of Neo-Confucianism. Hwaseo School's loyalty of rejecting heterodoxy originates from Springs and Autums' the Thought of Grand Unification and regarded Respect China (尊周) as important. This cultural awareness does not mean Respecting China (慕華), flunkyism toward China, but pride of the times that the Joseon Dynasty has its own culture. The thesis‘ table of contents includes raising the spirit of loyalty of modernity and the problems, discussion and development of the idea of defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy, the theory and practice of the spirit of loyalty, and the ideological value and prospect. Hwaseo School submitted dichotomous concepts of right or wrong (正邪) based on the doctrine of the principle as the principal when the dynamics between international relations and human society are explained. Hwaseo School clarified that simjuri is the standard by explaining the fact that saints usually referred sim as ri even though views of juri and jugi are all established in awareness of mind. Hwaseo School's idea of loyalty tried to preserve human dignity based on convictions about truth and justice and realize loyalty of Sasaengchwieui(捨生取義) in society and the nation. For the meaning and prospect of the thesis, it tried to clarify that Hwaseo School's righteous army movement was not the severance of the independence movement but the extension.

본 논문은 2019년 11월 30일 강원대학교 인문대학에서 개최된 제45회 한중인문학회 국제학술대회의 주제인 “일제 강점기 한ㆍ중 지역 독립운동의 인문학적 가치와 전망” 주제 하에 철학분야 주제발표인 화서학파의 한ㆍ중지역 독립운동의 사상적 가치 및 전망 을 수정․보완하였다. 화서학파는 화서 이항로를 중심으로 당시의 시대정신을 고민하고, 성리학의 문제인 심설 등의 문제를 강학하고 토론하였다. 화서학파의 척사의리는 춘추의 대일통사상에 근원하는 것으로 존주(尊周)를 중시했다. 이 문화의식은 중화사대주의인 모화(慕華)를 의미하는 것이 아니라 조선만이 그 문화를 지니고 있다는 시대적 자부심이다. 본 논고의 차제는 근대성의 의리정신 및 문제제기/ 위정척사사상의 논의 및 전개/ 의리정신의 이론 및 실천/ 사상적 가치 및 전망이다. 화서학파는 국제관계와 인간사회의 역학관계를 설명할 때에 주리론에 기초한 정사(正․邪)의 이분법적 개념들을 제출했다. 화서학파는 심의 인식에서 주리 및 주기의 관점이 모두 성립하더라도 성현들이 주로 심을 리로 언급한 사실을 들어 심주리가 기준임을 밝혔다. 화서학파의 의리사상은 진리와 정의에 대한 확신을 바탕으로 인간의 존엄성을 지키며, 이를 사회와 국가에 사생취의(捨生取義)의 의리를 실현하려고 하였다. 본 논고의 의의와 전망은 화서학파의 의병운동이 독립운동과의 연계성이 단절이 아니라 연속선 상의 길항을 밝히고자 하였다.
