In the initial stage of the Korean War, the North Korean Peoples Army(KPA) highly assessed the strategic value of Honam region, which is the southwest region on the peninsula. They employed the 6th Division as one of the best warfighting forces in order to support its submarine forces, which was equivalent to one division, to Honam region early and then to penetrate into Masan through Hadong-Jinju. At that time, Honam’s battle played a crucial role in enveloping the southern peninsula. The 6th Division of the KPA intruded Honam region on July 16, starting with the battle of Gunsan and Iksan. It was July 26 that they occupied Honam region including Mokpo and Yeosu ports. It was on the morning of July 31 that they occupied the pearls. If they had passed the Honam region, they would have been able to reach the pearls around July 20. If so, the battle situation on the early Korean War would have changed. The 6th Division wasted 10 days to control Honam region and lose the crucial time. Honam region contained the 6th Division. The reason why the KPA failed was that they attempted to resolve their logistics by using Mokpo and Yeosu ports. Second, the KPA was afraid of potential landing operations by the ROK and UN forces in the vicinity of Mokpo and Yeosu ports. Many military historians say that "during the Korean War, Honam region had neither special battles" nor "special roles." However, this study confirms that Honam played a decisive role in the initial stage of the Korean War as a sponge to absorb the KPA’s combat power and impact effects of the 6th Division of the North Korean Army.

6·25전쟁 초기 북한군은 호남지역의 전략적 가치를 높게 평가했다. 그들은 정예부대인 제 6사단과 함께 1개 사단에 버금가는 지원배속부대를 투입해 조기에 호남지역을 석권한 후 하 동-진주를 거쳐 마산으로 진출하려 했다. 그때 호남지역전투가 결정적인 역할을 담당했다. 북한군 제6사단은 7월 16일 군산, 익산전투를 시작으로 호남지역에 진입했다. 그들이 목 포항과 여수항 점령 등 호남지역을 석권한 것은 7월 26일이었다. 이어 그들은 결정적인 목 표인 마산으로 진출하기 위해 관문이었던 진주를 점령했다. 7월 31일 아침이었다. 북한군이 만약 호남지역을 통과해 순천-하동-진주로 직진했다면 그들은 7월 20일을 전후 해 진주에 도착할 수 있었을 것이다. 그랬다면 6·25전쟁 초기전투 상황은 달라졌을 것이다. 제6사단이 호남지역을 석권하기 위해 10여 일을 소모하면서 결정적인 시기를 놓친 것이다. 호남지역이 제6사단을 묶어두는 역할을 담당했다. 북한군이 그들의 결정적인 목표인 마신 진출을 늦추면서까지 호남지역을 석권하려 했던 이유는 무엇이었을까. 첫째, 목포항과 여수항을 활용해 그들의 보급문제를 해결하려 했던 것으로 본다. 둘째, 북한군은 목포항과 여수항을 이용한 국군과 유엔군의 상륙작전을 두려워했 던 것으로 본다. 많은 사람과 함께 일부의 전문 연구자들도 “6·25전쟁 시 호남지역은 특별한 전투가 없었 다”라고 하거나 “특별한 역할이 없었다”라고 평가한다. 그러나 이 연구를 통해 호남지역은 북 한군 제6사단 전력과 충격 효과를 흡수하는 스펀지 역할로 6·25전쟁 초기 결정적인 역할을 담당했음을 확인할 수 있다.
