This study started from some questions related with Banjjogi (half-man) story that has been passed on orally as an old folk tale. First, what is the reality of a man who has only a half of his whole body including his face? Second, what is the purpose of supernatural power that Banjjogi has and shows an amazing capabilities in terms of intelligence and physical power in comparison with other normal brothers? Third, there is a curiosity about the conclusion of most Banjjogi folk tales that contains somewhat criminal factors but ends in humorous marriage. Furthermore, what is the psychiatric mechanism running through the Banjjogi folk tales? This paper studied these questions through analyzing the narrative structures and motifs. Half body seems to symbolize the consciousness and subconsciousness of the incomplete person as presented in the previous studies and also seems to reflect the phenomena of the physical disorders such as birth of congenitally malformed newborn infants, facial malformation and physically disabled persons. One typical form of folk tales is the structure that the heroes with disorders win in the fights of the mundane world. As the elder brothers harass the disabled younger brother Banjjogi, Banjjogi’s capabilities are reinforced and reach the peak when Banjjogi defeats the tigers. In the consequent marriage talks ‘bridegroom approval’ process is developed and the narrative concludes in marriage by capture. All the Banjjogi folk tales carry the psychiatric mechanism of ‘horror-anxiety-terror’ respectively. This is related to marriage process that implies the successful entry into the society. The story of Banjjogi as an ‘abject’ depicts the persona that casts the both sides of grotesque terror and grotesque humor to his neighbors as the story evolves, making the Banjjogi as a bridegroom accomplishing ‘approved marriage by capture’ in the end.

본 연구는 口傳說話로 전승된 〈반쪽이〉 서사에 관한 몇 가지 의문에서 시작되었다. 첫번째, 얼굴을 포함한 신체가 반쪽 밖에 형성되지 않은 남성의 존재가 무엇인가? 두번째, 지력과 완력에 있어 다른 비장애 형제에 비해 놀라운 능력을 드러내는 반쪽이의 초능력은 무엇을 위한 것인가? 세번째는 대부분의 〈반쪽이〉 설화가 다소 폭력적이면서도 우스꽝스러운 혼인담으로 종결되는 것에 관한 궁금증이다. 나아가 〈반쪽이〉 설화를 관통하는 심리구조 메커니즘은 무엇인가 하는 것이다. 이를 서사 구조 분석과 화소 분석을 통해 알아보았다. 반쪽 신체는 선행 연구의 성과대로 의식과 무의식의 상징인 동시에 어느 시대에나 발생할 수 있는 畸形兒 출산, 안면장애인, 지체장애인의 현실을 일정 반영한 결과로 보인다. 장애요소를 지닌 주인공이 세계와의 대결에서 승리하는 구조는 설화문학이 갖는 전형의 하나이다. 형들의 억압강도가 세질 수록 반쪽이가 보여주는 능력 역시 강화되며 범 소탕 화소에서 정점을 이룬다. 바로 이어지는 혼인담에서 ‘신랑 승인’ 절차가 전개되며 掠奪婚으로 서사가 종결된다. 〈반쪽이〉 설화 각 편은 ‘공포-불안-폭력’의 심리적 메커니즘이 작동된다. 이는 入社式으로의 혼인절차와 연결되어 있다. 일종의 ‘아브젝트(abject)’인 반쪽이는 이야기 전개에 따라 주변에 공포의 그로테스크와 유희의 그로테스크 양면을 모두 선사하는 인물로 설정되어 끝내 ‘승인된 약탈혼’을 행하는 신랑이 되어간다.
