This article explores Choi Chi-Won’s description of the environment and the influence of the surrounding environment on him by examining the impressions of Jangnan in his poems in the Shilla Dynasty. The impressions of Jangnan in Choi Chi-Won’s poems can be divided into natural impressions, ancient and modern impressions and realistic impressions according to changes in his consciousness. This article will analyze these three aspects. Choi Chi-Won’s natural poems reflect strong homesickness. He missed his motherland and was reluctant to leave Jangnan where he had lived for seven years. He had always been lonely and boring. As he was frustrated for all his talent, he was lost, scared and anxious. Therefore, we can’t see the prosperous and extravagant beauty of Jangnan in his poems. Instead, a sense of tension and crisis prevails. Choi Chi-Won lived in Jangnan when the Tang Dynasty was declining and dying. In history, any powerful and prosperous empire will have ups and downs. Choi Chi-Won realized this point while cherishing the past and the present, and was depressed about the impermanence of his own destiny. At this time, Jangnan, like the three-dimensional paintings of ancient and modern times, set off his open-minded posture. Choi Chi-Won experienced the chaos and cruelty of the war in Jangnan. He included these painful experiences in his poems and expressed a strong sense of responsibility and criticism beyond a foreigner. In his poems, he ruthlessly exposed the corruption and degeneration of the ruling class, pointed out the contradictions and irrational phenomena in society, cared about the tragic situation of the working women at the bottom of society, and faithfully reflected the real life in the late Tang Dynasty. For Choi Chi-Won,Jangnan used to be the place to achieve his ambition and ideals, but the decline of the late Tang Dynasty and the cruelty of reality had repeatedly dampened his confidence. His poems never praised the beauty of Jangnan. Instead, they were full of desolateness and sorrow. But these poems realistically present Jangnan in the late Tang Dynasty, which has important practical significance.

본고는 신라시대의 지식인인 최치원의 시세계에 나타난 강남이미지에 착안하여 그가 처한 환경에 대한 묘사와 그 환경이 그에게 준 영향에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 최치원의 시세계에 나타난 강남이미지는 작가의식의 변화에 따라 향수와 이별의 정서, 회고와 달관의 태도, 현실비판의 의식 이 세 가지로 분류하여 고찰했다. 최치원의 자연시에서 깊은 향수에 젖은 것이 많은데 이때의 향수는 고국에 대한 그리움뿐만 아니라 7년 동안 머물던 강남에 대한 아쉬움도 함께 포괄할 수 있다. 작가는 불우하고 고독한 환경의 영향을 받아 방향을 잃은 공포감과 불안함을 느낀다. 때문에 그의 시에서 강남의 번영과 여유로움을 누릴 겨를이 없을 것이며 늘 긴장감과 위기감을 느끼는 전혀 다른 강남의 모습을 보여준다. 그는 당나라가 몰락한 상태에서 멸망해가는 역사적 단계에서 살았으며 역사의 홍수 속에 아무런 강대하고 대단한 왕조여도 파도와 같이 교대하게 된 것을 깨닫는다. 자신의 운명도 역시 덧없다는 것을 의식하면서 古今을 관통하는 입체적인 강남의 이미지를 그리며 초탈한 자세를 보여준다. 또한 강남에 있을 때 난세의 참상을 경험했던 작가는 이를 몹시 고통스러운 체험으로 시에서 되풀이한다. 그는 외국인으로서 당나라에 대해 외국인을 넘어선 강한 책임감과 비판의식을 가지고 있다. 사회적 모순과 부조리한 현상이 물론이고 통치계층의 부패와 사회정치의 암흑을 여지없이 폭로했으며 계층이 다른 여성의 삶까지 착안하여 당나라 말기의 강남의 현실을 여실히 묘사했다. 강남이 최치원에게 한 때는 이상의 실현이 가능한 곳이었다가 말세에 가속된 몰락한 현실이 그를 재차 강타했다. 그가 남긴 많은 시편에서 강남의 아름다움을 노래하기는커녕 오직 황폐함과 쓸쓸함만을 표현했다. 하지만 이를 통해 당나라 말기의 한 단면을 여실히 보여준 것으로 현실적 의미를 가진다.
