The purpose of this study is to examine college students' perception on English extracurricular programs and to search for improvement in program development based on the perception. The participants were grouped in three, according to their level of English. Their perception on programs were examined in a questionnaire. The lower level students tended not to know about extracurricular programs and preferred programs that provides professor instruction or consulting. On the other hand, the higher level students chose to participate self-study programs. The students' lack of time was the main reason for lack of participation. The lower level student's low interest in such programs was also confirmed, signalling a need to promote programs. The students of all levels hoped to include English related to their major in extracurricular programs. Connection to regular class in its content was positively supported. Among many categories about English learning, they wanted to have programs that can enhance their English speaking ability most. Also, the students wanted to have programs to study higher level of English and ones with entertaining features. Higher level students highly favored such types of programs. In a question to find out their favorite type of programs, the most preferred type of extracurricular programs involved professor instruction; a small-size class, and professors' individual consulting on their study. Higher level students liked a team teaching class of Korean and native speaking teachers and a camp type. The students of different levels showed significant unequal response in some of the survey questions. Thus, the result of the study should be taken into account in improvement and development of English extracurricular programs in a college.

본 연구의 목적은 대학생들의 영어 비교과프로그램에 대한 인식을 살펴보고 그 인식에 기반 하여 프로그램 개발의 개선방향을 찾는 데 있다. 참가자를 영어 능력에 따라 세 수준으로 구분 하여 인식의 차이를 설문조사하였다. 낮은 수준의 학생일수록 비교과프로그램에 대한 인식도가 낮았으며 교수가 지도/상담하는 형 태의 프로그램을 선호한 반면, 높은 수준의 학생들은 스스로 학습하는 프로그램을 재참여하고 자 하였다. 학생들이 시간이 부족한 것이 프로그램 미참여의 가장 큰 원인이었고 낮은 수준의 학 생들은 비교과프로그램에 대한 흥미가 부족하여 프로그램에 대한 홍보가 더 필요하다고 하겠다. 또한, 비교과프로그램에서 모든 수준의 학생들이 전공과 관련된 영어를 다루어주기를 희망하 였다. 프로그램의 학습내용이 정규수업과 연관되는 것은 긍정적으로 응답하였고, 영어학습의 여 러 영역 중에서 학생들은 회화능력을 배양할 수 있는 프로그램 개설을 가장 원하였다. 특히, 높 은 수준의 학생들은 난이도 있는 수준의 프로그램과 오락적 요소가 가미된 프로그램을 개설하기 를 희망하였다. 가장 선호하는 비교과프로그램 형태를 조사한 문항에서는 교수가 지도하는 형태 로 소규모 수업, 교수의 개별 지도/상담프로그램이었다. 수준이 높은 학생들은 내국인/원어민이 진행하는 수업과 캠프형태를 선호하였다. 본 연구에 참여한 학생들은 여러 문항에서 영어 능력 수준별 집단 간 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 영어 비교과프로그램 개발 및 운영시 반드시 고려해야 할 것으로 보인다.
