Korean classes in university should provide students not only with language knowledge (i.e. vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc.) and communication skills (i.e. listening, speaking, reading, and writing), but also with content knowledge and chances to think deeply. Based on this assumption, this study presents a Korean class model that uses a TV show with the aim of improving Korean proficiency, and content knowledge and thinking ability. The TV show exploited here is Differential Class (in Korean, 차이나는 클라스), the format and topics of which are fairly similar to the ones of university lectures. For example, the running time is around 50 minutes, and the topics are psychology, education, history, etc. The show also includes devices that helps to improve metacognition, which is required for lecture listening. Moreover, in terms of the contents, Differential Class has several educational benefits: a) expanding language and background knowledge, b) strategy enhancement for understanding, and c) developing questioning and discussing skills. The researcher, thus, judged the TV show as an appropriate material for Korean classes, and exploited it in her classes after going through the preparation, utilization, and expansion phases. The class was 75-minute class a week and conducted for two weeks. The description of the class is on Chapter 4 of this paper.

한국어

대학에서의 한국어 수업은 한국어의 언어 지식(어휘, 문법, 발음)이나 의사소통 기능(듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기) 이외에 내용 지식과 사고력 증진에 도움을 줄 수 있어야 한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 TV 강 연 프로그램을 한국어 수업에 활용하여 한국어 학습과 동시에 내용 지식 확장, 사고력 증진에 이바 지할 수 있는 수업을 제안하였다. TV 강연 프로그램 중 ‘차이나는 클라스’는 강연의 형식과 주제가 실제 대학 교양 강의와 상당히 유사하며 강의 듣기에서 요구하는 메타인지 능력 향상에 도움을 줄 수 있는 장치가 마련되어 있다. 또한, ‘차이나는 클라스’는 50분 내로 제작되어 있어 수업 현장에서 활용하기 쉬우며, 내용적인 측면에서는 1) 배경 지식 및 언어 지식의 확장 기능, 2) 내용 이해를 위 한 전략 강화, 3) 질문하기와 토론하기 기능 강화의 교육적 가치가 있다. 이에 연구자는 ‘차이나는 클라스’가 학습자의 내용 지식 확장과 대학 강의 이해하기, 질문하기와 토론하기 연습에 적합한 자 료라고 판단하고 준비, 활용, 확장의 단계를 거쳐 ‘차이나는 클라스’를 한국어 수업에 활용하였다. 한 주의 수업은 75분 단위 2차시로 진행하였으며 수업의 예를 4장에 기술하였다.
