The essential purpose of this study is to cultivate college students as citizens with mature multicultural citizenship through a liberal education class called reading multicultural novels. Our society, which took pure bloodism as a social norm for a long time, has rapidly been multiculturalized with social members due to the influx of migrants and international marriages. However, compared to the world's multicultural phenomena, the multicultural phenomena we experience in our society are still based on ethnic diversity. Even with the high proportion of international students in our university, we can feel the speed of multiculturalism in the global trend, and it is no longer possible to postpone multicultural education in the university. In the meantime, Korea's painful experience of contemporary history has made the awareness of mixed races, especially garrison mixed races, negative and even offensive with the idea of xenophobia. Garrison mixed-breathers eventually chose transnational migrations because of the oppression of Korean society or were just sent to overseas adoption regardless of their intentions as a child and experienced another multicultural oppression from adoptive countries and adoptive parents. Elizabeth Kim‘s Ten Thousand Sorrows, a representative American novel of multiculturalism, emphasizes the need of improving civil awareness of multiculturalism through the tragic life of a Korean American mixed raced adoptee who both experienced pure bloodism in Korea and the limits of multicultural society in the U.S.

본 연구의 목적은 다문화 교양교육 수업 콘텐츠로써 영미소설 읽기의 타당성과 가능성을 확인 하고, 소설의 주제를 통해 다문화주의의 문제점을 성찰하는 것이다. 오랫동안 순혈주의를 사회적 규범으로 당연시한 우리 사회는 급속도로 이주 외국인 유입과 국제결혼 등으로 구성원이 다문화 되고 있지만, 세계의 다문화 현상과 비교해 우리의 다문화 현상은 여전히 인종적 다양성이 기초 적인 수준이다. 그러나 최근 우리 대학에서 차지하는 외국인 유학생의 높은 비중만 보더라도 세 계적 추세의 다문화 속도를 체감할 수 있으며 더는 대학에서의 다문화 교양교육을 미룰 수 없는 상황이 되었다. 한국은 근현대사의 아픈 경험으로 혼혈인, 특히 주둔지 혼혈인에 대한 인식이 거 의 외국인 혐오증에 가까울 정도로 부정적이며 배척의식이 강하다. 주둔지 혼혈인은 자민족 중심 적인 한국 사회의 억압을 견디지 못하고 자발적으로 초국가 이주를 선택하거나 혹은 어린 시절 본 인의 의사와 관계없이 해외 입양에 보내지면서 입양국가와 양부모에게서 또 다른 다문화 억압을 경험한다. 다문화주의의 대표적인 미국 소설인 엘리자베스 김의 『만 가지 슬픔』은 한국의 순혈주 의와 미국의 초 다문화주의를 배경으로, 서로 다른 양상의 다문화주의의 비극을 경험하는 주둔 지 혼혈 여성의 비극적인 삶을 조명하여 다문화 인식 개선과 필요성을 강조한다.
