The purpose of this study is to find out the possibility of expanding the application of physical education as a moral education and the meaning in elementary education. To this end, this study attempted to find similarities by comparing and analyzing curricula between physical education and moral education. This study also examined the characteristics of moral education in practical physical education class of elementary school. In addition, the purpose of this study was to examine the implications of the expansion of the role of physical education as a moral education for elementary education. Physical education curriculum and moral education curriculum had structural similarities that presented various affective elements centered on core values and they also had content similarities that emphasize performance-based education, whole person education, and achievement standard of affective domain. Furthermore, it was said that the physical education has a moral education characteristic in terms of moral thinking education, values and virtues education, moral community education, and expanding value relations education. The expansion of the role of physical education as a moral education has important implications: supplementing the role of moral education, realizing moral education in connection with life, and realizing integrated moral education. In the future, elementary school physical education will have to expand its function and role as a moral education curriculum that can cultivate students’character and morality.

본 연구는 초등교육에서 도덕교육으로서 체육교육의 역할확장 가능성을 알아보고 그 의의를 찾고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 문서적 차원에서 체육과와 도덕과 교육과정을 비교·분석하여 유사성을 찾고자 하였으며 실천적 차 원에서 초등학교 체육수업에서 나타나는 도덕교육적 특징을 살펴보았다. 이와 함께 도덕교육으로서 체육교육의 역 할확장이 초등교육에 어떠한 의의를 가지고 있는지를 구체적으로 알아보고자 하였다. 체육과와 도덕과 교육과정은 핵심 가치를 중심으로 다양한 정의적 요소를 제시하고 있는 구조적 유사성과 수행 중심의 교육, 전인 교육, 정의적 영역의 성취 기준을 강조하는 내용적 유사성을 보여주고 있었다. 또한 체육과가 도덕적 사고력 교육, 가치·덕목 교 육, 도덕적 공동체 교육, 가치관계 확장 교육이 가능하다는 점에서 실천적 차원에서 도덕교육적 성격을 가지고 있 다고 말할 수 있었다. 도덕교육으로서 체육교육의 역할확장은 도덕과의 역할 보충, 생활연계 도덕교육 실현, 통합적 도덕교육 실현이라는 중요한 의의를 지니고 있었다. 앞으로의 초등학교 체육교육은 학생들의 올바른 인성과 도덕성 을 함양시킬 수 있는 교과로서의 기능과 역할을 점차 확대해 나가야 할 것이다.
