This paper intends to explore the multi-semantics and connotations of the term 'Baoying(retribution)', and through the analysis of historical texts, discuss the changes of its meaning and the process of its semantic connotation, and the changes of the concept of retribution. The historical background and social factors are also considered. The current research is not enough to explain the semantics and conceptual genealogy of retribution concept. Therefore, this study intends to discuss and reconstruct the process of accumulation and the concept construction of Baoying's semantics through text analysis. This article focuses on the study of Chinese traditional retribution concepts and related concepts before the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty firstly. Then it discusses the influence of Buddhist translation on the concept of retribution, as well as the formation process of words and concepts of 'Mingbao冥報' and 'Yingyan應驗'. Finally, the process and the pedigree of the semantics of 'Baoying' and retribution concept will be reconstructed.

본문은 ‘보응’이라는 단어에 포함된 복잡하고 다원화된 의미와 내포된 의미를 탐구하고, 역사 텍스트의 분석을 통해 의미의 변천과 그의 역사적 배경을 탐구하는 것이다. 현재의 연구는 ‘보응’의 의미와 개념보계에 대한 연구가 부족하기 때문에, 본 연구에서는 ‘보응’ 의미 누적과 개념의 변천 과정을 텍스트 분석을 통해 검토하고 이 과정을 재구성하려고 한다. 본문은 동한東漢 말기 이전에 중국 전통의 보응관념과 관련 개념의 변천을 고찰하며, 불교역경이 보응관념에 미치는 영향과 명보冥報와 응험應驗의 형성과정을 탐구한다. 마지막으로 ‘보응’의 의미와 보응의 관념 발전의 계보를 다시 재건할 수 있다.
