This paper tries to shed light on the basis of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in Namdae, Odaesan Mountain. The basic structure of Mt. Odae was established by the Bocheon during the Silla Dynasty, and according to this the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva was enshrined in Namdae. It is possible to assume that Bocheon may have chosen the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva because Ksitigarbha belief was somewhat popular in the Silla period. Therefore I confirmed how the Ksitigarbha belief was established in China before the Silla Dynasty. At that time, Silla accepted Buddhism in China, so Buddhism in China was developed also in Silla. Thus, if active Ksitigarbha belief was in vogue in China at that time, this fact is enough to be a precondition for the spread of Silla’s Ksitigarbha belief. As the Ksitigarbha belief became popular in China, the Ksitigarbha belief became popular in Silla too. And I tried to catch an evidence why Bocheon established the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva at Namdae. But I could not find out any evidence about the residence of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva on the Buddhist scriptures. However, many scriptures have shown that the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva appeared in the south when he appeared, and the 『SUTRA OF THE PAST VOWS OF EARTH STORE BODHISATTVA』 says that when the person is trying to take care of the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, it must be kept south of his place. And since the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva is the proxy who is in charge of the relief mission of the people who live on in the era of non-Buddha, so people should first rely on the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva before the era of the Maitreya Buddha comes. And it is naturally formed to enter Mt. Odae in Korea from the south. Thus, by establishing the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva at the southern part of the mountain, one can naturally worship all the other Buddhist saints. Based on these diverse scriptural bases, it is clear why Bocheon established the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva at Namdae on Odae Mountain.

이 논문은 五臺山 南臺에 지장보살을 모신 근거를 밝히려고 한다. 신라 시대 寶川의 유훈에 의하여 오대산의 기본적인 가람 구도가 확립되었는데 이에 의하여 南臺에는 지장보살을 모시게 되었다. 地藏菩薩 신앙이 신라 시대에 널리 유행을 하였기에 보천이 大乘經典에 등장하는 수많은 佛菩薩 중에서 지장보살을 선택하여 남대에 모셨을 것이다. 그렇지만 왜 하필 남대에 모셨는가 하는 점에 대하여 그 이유는 지금까지 명확하지 않다. 따라서 그 이유를 찾고자 일단 그 전제로서 필자는 지장보살신앙의 개념을 알아보았다. 그리고 당시에 중국과 신라에 유행하던 지장보살신앙을 통하여 합리적 이유를 도출하고자 하였다. 당시에 중국에서 지장보살신앙이 유행되자 신라에서도 지장보살신앙이 널리 보급되는데, 이러한 유행은 중국에 유학하였던 유학승이 주도한 경향이 있다. 특히 신라의 지장보살 신앙은 점찰법회를 통하여 유포되는 특징을 보이는데 이렇게 널리 지장보살신앙이 보천과 동시대에 신라에 유행하였다는 사실은 보천이 오대산에 지장보살을 모시게 되는 강력한 動因으로 작용한 것이다. 나아가 경전에 의거하여 지장보살신앙과 남대의 연관성을 찾고자 여러 경전을 검토하여 보고 어떤 관련성이 있는가를 살펴보았다. 경전에는 지장보살의 住處가 명확하게 확정되어 있지 않다. 그러나 많은 경전에서 지장보살이 등장할 때 남쪽에서 나타난 사실을 확인해 볼 수 있었다. 그리고『地藏菩薩本願經』에는 중생이 지장보살을 모시려 할 때는 자신이 사는 곳의 남쪽에 모셔야 한다는 내용이 있음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 오대산 남대의 지형에 근거하여 그 논거를 유추하여 보았다.
