The purpose of this paper is to propose a practice based on personality and the restoration of personality in contemporary society in which mammonism and individualism are prevalent, especially through practicing Yulgok’s theory of personality and Chinchin theory which was shown in his life. Yulgok argued that practicing four virtues(benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom), cultivating the mind, and learning with right mind and mastering it with an active comprehension of moral standards will lead to morally ideal society. He argued that Daedongsahoi will become strengthened when morally ideal society is realized by lots of people revealing virtue. Many studies on Yulgok in various fields have been conducted but there are few investigations that highlight the point that practicing philosophy is not far from real life. One of confucianism’s important roles is to pursue the formation of right character and the establishment of order and courtesy through education. Therefore, to see the restoration of human nature which is seriously required in contemporary society through Confucianists’ thoughts is meaningful. Confucianism basically considers men to be moral and thus the discussion of moral practice based on Yulgok’s theory of personality is in the same context as what Confucianists’ thoughts aim to achieve. This paper studies the practice of Chinchin thought while focusing on Yulgok’s theory of personality among his thoughts, and therefore conducts an analysis of content based on his works and data which are obtained through scholars’ studies. For this purpose, in section 2, Yulgok’s theory of personality is mainly discussed and in section 3, the practice of personality is discussed, giving examples of Chinchin thought which he put into action. The finding of this study will contribute to letting people know that studying philosophy is associated with a universal practice beyond thinking.

본고의 목적은 율곡의 인성론과 그의 생애에서 드러난 유학의 친친사상 실천을 통해 물질만능주의와 개인주의가 만연한 현대사회에 인성 회복과 더불어 인성을 근거로 하는 실천을 제안하는 데 있다. 율곡은 정심수양공부(正心修養工夫)를 통한 인의예지를 실천하고 도덕 규범의 적극적인 체득으로 그것이 체화되면 도덕적 이상사회가 되는 것이라고 하였다. 그리고 대동사회(大同社會)는 많은 사람이 선(善)을 발현하여 도덕적으로 이상사회가 되었을 때 공고(鞏固)해진다고 하였다. 율곡에 관한 연구는 다양한 분야에서 다수 이루어졌지만, 그의 사상을 구체적인 사례를 들어 철학실천이 현실 생활과 멀지 않음을 부각한 논문은 있지 않다. 유학의 역할 중 큰 비중을 차지하는 것은 개인이 인격적 완성을 추구하는 것과 교육을 통한 질서와 예속을 확립하는 데 있다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 현대사회에서 절실하게 요구하고 있는 인간성 회복을 유학사상에서 찾는 것은 의미가 있다고 할 것이다. 유학은 기본적으로 인간을 도덕적이라고 보기 때문에 율곡의 인성론을 근거로 도덕 실천을 논하는 것은 유학사상이 지향하는 바와 맥을 같이 한다. 본고는 율곡의 사상 중 인성론에 초점을 두고, 친친사상 실천을 연구했기 때문에 그의 저서와 후세 사람들이 연구한 자료를 토대로 내용분석 방법을 사용하였다. 이를 위해 2장에서는 율곡의 인성론을 중심으로 논하였고, 3장에서는 율곡이 실천하였던 유학의 친친사상 사례를 들어 인성실천을 논하였다. 이는 철학함이 사유에만 그치는 것이 아닌 보편적 실천과 연관됨을 알리는 데 기여할 것이다.
