Cui Zhiyuan is an outstanding poet, scholar and writer living in the late Tang Dynasty and the late Silla Kingdom. He is a key figure in the history of Korean literature. In his early years, Cui Zhiyuan studied abroad in China’s Tang Dynasty and became an official through the imperial examination. Later, he served at a provincial governor office during the social turmoil in the late Tang Dynasty and returned to his motherland at the age of 29. Cui Zhiyuan's literary achievements play a key role in the development of Korean literature. His living background and life experience are essential to the formation of his literary and social political thoughts. Therefore, the research on Cui Zhiyuan's life experience is an important foundation for the study of his literary thoughts, works and social political thoughts, and is also significant for the study of late Tang Dynasty and Silla culture and society.

최치원은 당과 신라 후기의 저명한 시인이자 학자이다. 최치원은 젊은 시절 당 에서 유학을 했고 과거 시험을 통해 당의 관료가 되었다. 당말 반란이 빈발하자 그는 당의 절도사의 막부에까지 임직하였으나, 29살의 나이로 신라에 귀국하였다. 최치원의 문학적 성과는 한국 문학의 발전에 아주 중요한 영향을 끼쳤다. 최치원 이 활동하던 시대의 배경과 그 일생은 그의 문학 작품과 사회 정치사상에 대해 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 이러한 이유로 최치원의 일생과 행적에 대한 연구는 당과 신 라의 문화와 사회연구뿐만 아니라 그의 문학사상, 문학작품, 또는 사회정치사상을 알 수 있는 중요한 기초가 될 것이다.
