Volunteering program is broadly utilized to give energy and meaning to retired individual's life. It is important for retirees to participate in customized volunteering activities in line with their backgrounds and capabilities. This narrative study explored, how a high-professional retiree "A" became to participate in volunteering programs, what he experienced during the volunteering activities, and how he had been changed and developed as a human being with those experiences. After a couple of trying of volunteering programs, he participated in SAY program to teach Korean colloquial language to college students in the States via video conferences. He experienced the development of generativity with this program. Learning from this case gave him a momentum to reestablish relationships with his children as a father which was a long-term issue to him. He realized that volunteering activities gave him more values to develop himself than serving others while he was working as a volunteer after retirement, which was an unexpected experience for him. He became to realize the basic principles of communication and importance of consideration for others, and this learning led him to reflect himself that he had lived with an absence of those skills. He got series of transformative learning to change his views on human relationship and attitude on people which resulted in him to realize the importance of social asset based on relationships with other people including friends and family. Series of transformative learning of A were integrated into the development of generativity of him.

은퇴 후 자원봉사는 은퇴자 개인의 삶에 의미와 활력을 주는 계기로 활용되고 있다. 다 양한 직업적 배경과 능력을 가진 은퇴자들이 은퇴 후 각 개인의 경력과 능력에 맞는 맞춤 형 자원봉사제도를 찾아 활동하는 것은 은퇴자 개인들의 삶에 중요한 일이다. 이 연구는 고학력 전문직에 종사하다가 은퇴한 연구 참여자가 은퇴 후에 어떻게 자신에게 맞는 자원 봉사 프로그램을 찾고 참여하게 되었는지, 자원봉사 활동들을 하면서 무엇을 경험하고, 이 를 통해 어떻게 변화, 성장해 갔는지를 그의 이야기를 분석하여 알아본 내러티브 연구이 다. 연구 참여자는 공직에서 30년간 근무한 후 은퇴하였다. 여러 가지 자원봉사 프로그램 의 시도 끝에 그는 미국의 대학생들에게 화상대화를 통하여 한국어를 가르치는 프로그램 에 참여하면서 인간발달 과정의 생산성(generativity)을 경험하게 되었다. 이것은 그가 아버 지로서 오랫동안 숙제였던 자식과의 관계를 새롭게 정립하는 계기가 되었다. 은퇴 후 자 원봉사의 여정 속에서 자원봉사활동이 다른 사람에게 봉사하는 것이라기보다, 오히려 자신 의 성장 기회임을 경험 하게 되었다. 그는 새삼 소통의 기본을 배우고 배려의 중요함을 깨 달으며 평생 그러하지 못했던 자신에 대해 성찰하게 되고, 그 과정에서 일과 관계에 대한 생각의 관점을 바꾸게 되었다. 그는 연속적인 전환적 경험들을 통해 인간에 대한 시각과 관계에 대한 태도를 재정립하고 성장하고 있다는 느낌을 갖게 되었으며, 사회적 자산으로 서 인간관계의 소중함을 알게 되었다. 자원봉사를 통한 그의 전환적 경험들은 인간발달 단 계의 생산성의 발달로 통합되었다.
