This study aims to look at the meaning of cultural-art education that adults who are in the lifelong education through calligraphy. For this, the research looked at the developmental process of Chinese aesthetics education and the position calligraphic education takes in education of China. Influenced by traditional aesthetics based on Confucianism and modern Western learning, Cai Yuanpei asserted “Aesthetics Education,” and what the education is seeking affected modern aesthetics education and lifelong education. Fostering nice nature, habits and cultural knowledge through calligraphy is expected since the calligraphy education in China is mandatory in elementary to middle schools. Also, based on this, the education promotes the formation of cultural capital of national level as well as spreading the influence of calligraphy to every parts of the society. The essence of calligraphy is the expression of energy that human’s inner world has and the figurative beauty that can show the vitality that nature’s object has through lines. Based on this, the implications that calligraphy education for adults are not technical education for sophisticated skills but passage to release one’s emotions, action of transcribing, and caring the concept of well-being.

본 연구의 목적은 평생교육의 장에 있는 성인들이 서예를 통해 취할 수 있는 문화예술 교육의 의미를 알아보는 것이다. 이를 위해 중국의 심미교육의 발전과정과 중국교육에서 서예교육이 갖는 위치를 살펴보았다. 유교를 중심으로 하는 전통적 심미사상과 근대 서구 학문의 영향으로 차이위안페이(蔡元培)는 미육(美育)을 주장했으며, 미육이 추구하는 바는 현대의 심미교육과 평생교육에 영향을 미치고 있다. 중국의 서예교육은 중, 소학교의 경우 필수교과목으로 지정되어 있어서 서예를 통한 품 성, 습관, 문화소양의 함양을 기대할 수 있으며, 이를 토대로 서예의 영향력을 사회 곳곳으 로 파급시키는 공공적 기능과 함께 국가적 수준의 문화자본의 형성을 도모하고 있다. 서예의 본질은 자연의 대상이 가진 생명력을 선(線)으로 나타낼 수 있는 조형미와 인간 의 내면세계가 가진 에너지의 표현이라고 할 수 있다. 이를 기반으로 하여 성인대상의 서 예교육이 평생교육 측면의 문화예술교육에 주는 함의는 정밀한 기교를 배우는 교육이 아니라 감정을 발산할 수 있는 산(散), 글을 베껴 쓰는 과정인 서사(書寫)의 행위, 웰빙 개념 의 양생(養生)이라고 보았다.
