The release of February 28 novel can be broadly divided into early, middle, late periods. It is mostly on the resistance against authority, conflicts among ethnic groups due to the crash between the mainlanders and Taiwanese, reflection of ‘Taiwan- first consciousness (台灣意識)’ by looking back and remembering the past. Recently, the government made an effort to investigate the February 28 incident in order to find truth of the history. To understand what has happened, it is necessary to know the social conditions of Taiwan back then. Therefore, in order to have a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s social conditions after the independence and explore the causes of the incident, I researched the early novel: Lu Heruo’s 󰡔Winter Nights󰡕. As a result, the work reveals his father's incompetence. The existence of a father symbolizes power or a state. The heroine Cai Feng's (彩鳳) father was not able to show his economic ability from the Japanese colonial period to the period after liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Such a situation shows that Taiwan did not have the role of government and political function at the time. As a result, Cai Feng, the symbol of Taiwan society, is in a sad situation where he had to get married twice and engage in economic activities in bars. Regardless of social structure, family members, society and the public fall into chaos when the governmental body is unable to play its role.

2·28소설의 발표 시기는 크게 초기, 중기, 후기로 나눌 수 있다. 주로 권력에 대한 저항, 族群(ethnic group)간 갈등, 기억의 상처를 위로하고 과거의 반성을 요하는 내용 등을 다루고 있다. 최근 타이완 정부는 2·28사건의 진상을 올바로 규명하여 역사 바로 세우기에 들어갔다. 역사의 진실을 찾기 위해서는 우선 당시 사회에 대한 이해가 필요하다. 그래서 필자는 초기 작품인 呂赫若의 『冬夜』를 중심으로 광복 후 타이완 사회에 대한 이해를 넓힘과 동시에 사건의 발생 원인에 대한 고찰을 해 보았다. 그 결과 이 작품에는 곳곳에 아버지의 무능이 드러난다. 흔히 아버지란 존재는 권력이나 국가를 상징한다. 하지 만 『冬夜』의 여주인공인 彩鳳의 아버지는 일제식민통치시기와 광복 이후에 이르기까지 경제적으로 무능했고, 이는 彩鳳이 두 번의 결혼과 술집에서 일을 해야 했던 불행한 삶을 살게 한 가장 큰 원인이 되었다. 어느 사회를 막론하고 정부조직이 그 역할을 다하지 못하면 사회의 구성원인 민중들은 혼란과 어려움에 빠지게 된다. 작가는 彩鳳으로 대표되는 당시의 타이완 사회의 혼란함이 아버지의 무능, 즉 무능한 타이완 정부가 원인임을 작품을 통해 독자 에게 알리고자 한 것이다.
