As UNESCO designated Jeju dialect as the language in danger of extinction, Jeju dialect has been recognized its unique value while becoming a precarious language at the same time. In particular, the number of circumstances where Jeju dialect is being used is decreasing as relevant culture and tradition gradually disappear. Losing a language indicates the extinction of the language users’ thoughts, historical awareness, and unique life styles. Consequently, the extinction of Jeju dialect is equivalent to the loss of a valuable cultural asset. The extinction of Jeju dialect will lead to the disappearance of Jeju culture and the uniqueness of Jeju. The purpose of this research is to examine the overall characteristics of Jeju dialect with respect to its phonology, grammar and vocabulary to suggest future directions. The extant research on the actual condition of Jeju dialect conducted to high school students would have yielded more meaningful implications if it covered more vocabularies and students. However, the research results are not different from those of other students. In particular, it is meaningful that the future directions for conservation and utilization are almost identical. There is no easy fix for the conservation of Jeju dialect. Efforts and implementation are required concerning a variety of disciplines. Research, education, and popularization are critical for the conservation and the future of Jeju dialect, which are in a complementary relationship with one another. In this sense, the relationship between them is like a tree. As strong roots and stems of a tree bear beautiful flower and fruit, the research and collection of data and the education on Jeju dialect will lead to content-based popularization. These three areas are essential for the conservation of Jeju dialect, whereby they organically complement one another by mutual amplification of their effects.

유네스코가 제주 방언을 소멸 위기 언어로 지정함으로써 제주 방언은 독자적 가치가 인정됨과 동시에 위기의 언어가 되었다. 특히 제주 방언이 사용되는 고유한 문화와 전통이 서서히 사라짐에 따라 사용하는 환경도 줄어들고 있다. 언어를 상실한다는 것은 곧 해당 언어를 사용하는 사람들의 독특한 사고방식과 역사 인식, 그리고 사물을 대하는 자신들만의 독특한 생태 양식의 사멸을 의미한다. 결과적으로 언어 소멸은 인류의 소중한 문화유산의 단절로 이어지는 것이다. 제주 방언의 소멸은 제주 문화, 제주다움의 소멸로 이어질 것이다. 이 연구는 제주 방언의 가치 발견과 계승을 위해 음운, 문법, 어휘면에서 제주 방언의 특징을 개괄적으로 살펴보고, 앞으로 나아갈 방향을 모색해 보고자 하였다. 고등학생을 대상으로 한 제주 방언 실태 조사에서는 더 많은 단어를 가지고 더 많은 학생을 대상으로 조사되어야 할 것이라는 아쉬움이 남는다. 그러나 그 결과가 다른 연구와 다르지 않으며 특히 보존과 활용 방법으로 제시하는 바가 거의 일치하는 것은 의미가 있다고 볼 수 있다. 제주 방언의 보존은 한 번에 이루어지는 쉬운 일이 아니다. 많은 분야에서 많은 고민과 실천이 뒤따라야 한다. 조사, 교육, 대중화라는 세 영역은 제주 방언의 보존과 미래를 위해 꼭 필요한 부분이며 상호 보완하여 상생할 수 있는 관계라고 할 수 있다. 그런 의미에서 이들의 관계는 하나의 나무와도 같다. 뿌리와 줄기가 튼튼하면 아름다운 꽃과 맛있는 열매 를 얻을 수 있는 것처럼 구술 자료 채록 조사와 방언 교육으로 뿌리와 줄기를 튼튼히 하면 콘텐츠를 활용한 대중화라는 꽃과 열매를 맺을 수 있을 것이다. 이 세 가지 영역은 제주 방언 보존에서 반드시 필요한 부분이며, 하나의 나무와 같은 유기체로서 서로를 필요로 하며 서로를 통해 확장할 수 있는 관계인 것이다.
