The purpose of this study was to reflect on the study of character strengths, which is a key theme of positive psychology, and to suggest suggestions for character strengths research direction. To this end, based on the suggestion of positive psychology that the act of generating satisfaction and positive emotions by displaying one's own signature strengths and virtues is the way to experience true happiness, first, the meaning and importance of character strengths as a key to promoting happiness, the classification system of character strengths and its academic significance have been highlighted. Second, the contents and characteristics of the research on character strengths have been examined. Third, problems that could be overlooked in the study and application of character strengths have been considered. Lastly, Suggestions for future research and practice tasks necessary to contribute more faithfully to the contribution of happiness and well-being to individuals and communities were discussed. The fragmentary and partial understanding and application of character strengths, the difference between recognition and use of character strengths, the lack of continuous use and development of character strengths, and overlooking weaknesses that are biased only in strengths were reflected. Further research and practical tasks are as follows: Research and practice of character strengths in the aspect of character education, strengthening the sustainability of use and development of character strengths, enhancing synergy through covitality, harmonization and integration of strength development and weakness complement, promoting the best effect through optimal use of individual strengths, and complementing and developing the limitations of the VIA character strengths classification system.

본 연구는 긍정심리학의 핵심적 주제인 성격강점 연구에 대한 반성적 고찰과 함께 성격강점 연구가 지향할 방향에 대한 제언을 하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 자신의 대표강점과 미덕을 발 휘함으로써 만족과 긍정적 정서를 자아내는 행위가 진정한 행복을 경험하는 길이라고 보는 긍정심리학의 제안에 기초하여 행복 증진의 핵심 방안으로서의 성격강점의 의미와 중요성, 성격강점의 분류체계와 학술적 의의를 조명해보고, 그 동안 이루어진 성격강점 연구의 내용 과 특성을 살펴본 뒤, 성격강점 연구와 적용에서 간과될 수 있는 문제점을 반성적으로 고찰 해 보았다. 그리고 긍정심리학의 본래 목표인 개인과 공동체의 행복과 안녕에 보다 충실하게 기여하기 위해 필요한 추후 연구 및 실천의 과제를 제언하고자 하였다. 반성적 고찰의 내용 으로는 성격강점의 단편적이고 부분적인 이해와 적용, 성격강점의 인식과 활용간의 차이, 성 격강점의 지속적 활용과 계발의 부족, 강점에만 치우쳐 약점을 간과하는 문제가 논의되었다. 추후 연구와 실천의 과제로는 인성교육차원에서의 성격강점 연구와 실천, 성격강점 활용과 계발의 지속성 강화를 위한 연구와 실천, 상호활성화를 통한 시너지 효과 증진을 위한 연구 와 실천, 강점개발과 약점 보완의 조화와 통합을 강화하는 연구와 실천, 개인의 다양한 변인 을 고려하여 최적의 강점 활용을 통한 최선의 효과를 가져오는 연구와 실천, 성격강점 VIA분류체계의 한계를 보완하고 발전시키는 연구와 실천의 과제가 제언되었다.
