By reading Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, Dewey could grasp the principles of Kant’s moral philosophy: goodness belongs to the will; the good of conducts should be for the sake of duty, not in accordance with the commands of duty; the good will comes from reverences for law as law; the will is that of universal legislation. The problem, however, is that Dewey does not criticizes Groundwork in depth, and also misunderstands it in some cases. Behind this problem lies the preunderstanding of Dewey that Kant’s moral philosophy is ethical formalism and does not overcome the dualism of theory and fact. The clarification of Dewey’s preunderstanding on Kant’s Moral philosophy not only helps us to understand Dewey’s position and critical arguments on Kant’s moral philosophy, but also serves as a basis for the problem of the continuation and discontinuity of Dewey’s thoughts in the middle and later works of Dewey.

듀이는 『도덕형이상학정초』를 통해서 칸트에게 선은 의지에 있고, 행위 준칙은 의무에 부합하는 것이 아니라 의무로부터 나오는 것이며, 선의지는 법칙 그 자체에 대한 존경에서 나오고, 의지는 법칙에 복종할 뿐만 아니라 보편적인 법칙을 수립한다는 것을 잘 알고 있었다. 그러나 일견 듀이의 『도덕형이상학정초』독법은 그렇게 치밀하지 않으며, 오해로도 읽힌다. 이는 칸트 윤리학이 형식주의이며 이론과 사실의이원론을 벗어나지 못한다는, 전기 듀이의 선이해가 야기한 것이다. 이런 선이해는 도덕성이 활동이며, 도덕적 이론과 도덕적 실천이 떼려야뗄 수 없는 것이라는 테제, 전기 듀이에서부터 강조된 ‘관심’과 ‘환경에대한 적응’의 윤리가 뒷받침하고 있다. 칸트 『도덕형이상학정초』대한 전기 듀이의 선이해는 전기 듀이 윤리학에 대한 이해를 심화시켜줄뿐만 아니라, 이후 중기, 후기 듀이의 윤리학적 논의에서의 연속과불연속을 살필 때에도 논거의 기준이 될 것이다.
