The purpose of this study is to find evidence-based theories and practical grounds on what and how school moral education should do for the academic achievements as well as for moral(character) development of students for future healthy democratic citizens. It is a introductory approach. To this end, I wanted to find the beginning of social and emotional learning (SEL), which has proven its effectiveness in many countries around the world, including the United States today. Therefore, after comprehensively analyzing the background and meaning of SEL, what are the goals and core competencies of SEL, what programs are being developed and used, and what are the effects of them, I explored some implications to provide us when we try to teach and research evidence-based moral education in Korea.

본 연구는 학생들의 학업 성취는 물론 미래 건전한 민주시민으로 살아가는데 필요한 바람직한 도덕성(인성) 발달을 위해 학교 도덕(인성) 교육이 무엇을, 어떻게 해야 할까?에 대한 증거기반 이론과 실제의 근거를 찾고자 하는 시론적 접근이다. 이를 위해 오늘날 미국을 포함한전 세계의 많은 나라에서 적용하고 그 효과가 있음이 검증되고 있는사회정서적 학습(Social and Emotional Learning, SEL)에서 그 단초를찾고자 하였다. 따라서 SEL의 등장 배경과 그 의미, SEL의 목표와 핵심 역량이 무엇이고, 어떤 프로그램이 개발되어 활용되고 있으며 그효과가 무엇인지를 종합적으로 분석한 후, 향후 우리나라에서 증거기반 도덕(과) 교육을 하고자 할 때 주는 시사점을 탐구하였다.
