This study examines the role of resilience on the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation among mothers of children with mental retardation. The sample for this study was drawn from several special education schools in South Korea. A total of 234 mothers of children with mental retardation completed the survey. The finding indicated that increased depression is associated with a high level of suicidal ideation. The results of hierarchical regression analysis showed that depression was a significant predictor of suicidal thought. After controlling for the effects of demographic variables, resilience made a significant contribution in changing suicidal thought. This study also examined whether resilience moderates the effects of depression on suicidal ideation. There was evidence in favor of the moderating roles of resilience. Implications of social work practices and social work policy for preventing suicide among mothers of children with disability will be discussed.

이 연구는 장애아동을 둔 어머니들의 우울과 자살생각사이에서 자아탄력성의 역할을 검증하고자 하였다. 본 연구 대상자들은 특수교육기관을 통해 표본 추출을 하였다. 234명의 장애아동을 둔 어머니 대상으로 연구를 실시하였다. 연구결과 장애아동을 둔 어머니들의 우울증이 증가할수록 자살생각도 높아지는 것으로 확인되었다. 다중회귀분석 결과 우울증은 자살생각에 중요 변수인 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 자아탄력성도 자살생각에 강력한 영향을 주는 변수로 확인되었다. 본 연구는 자아탄력성의 완충효과를 검증하고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 자아탄력성은 우울과 자살생각 사이에서 완충효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과를 토대로 향후 장애아동을 둔 어머니들의 자살예방을 위한 사회복지 실천적 함의와 정책적 함의에 대하여 토론하였다.
