This paper aims to investigate Joyce’s literary heritage down to Heaney, based on their common features. On the whole, Joyce had greater influence on Heaney than any other writers by judging from the following common features: first, Joyce and Heaney, both Catholics, sought to create art free from the net of Catholic jingoism. Meanwhile Joyce and Heaney—unlike Yeats—tried to expose even paralysis and misery of the Irish people in the realistic way to better the Irish life. Moreover, the two writers tried to overcome the sense of lack in language derived from extinction of Gaelic and use English as a native weapon. And last but not least, Joyce’s influence is seen in the fact that Heaney also tried to reinvent Ireland with new conscience as Joyce did. In brief, Heaney inherited Joyce’s modernism characterized by art free from political and religious nets and meliorism.

이 논문은 조이스가 히니에게 끼친 영향을 그들의 공통점을 근거로 고 찰한다. 그런데 대체로 다음과 같은 공통점 때문에 히니는 조이스의 영향을 받았다고 판단 할 수 있다:그 첫 번째로는 두 작가 모두 편협 된 가톨릭 국수주의로부터 자유 로운 예술을 추구했고 두 번째로는 아일랜드의 마비되고 비참한 현실을 노출시켜 개 선하고자 사실주의 기법을 사용했다. 세 번째 공통점은 게일어 소멸에서 오는 자신들 의 언어에 대한 결핍감 때문에 아일랜드 경험을 소재로 삼았고 영어를 토착무기로 사 용하기 위해 영어구사에 있어 장인의 위치에 도달했다는 점이다. 그리고 마지막으로 간과해서는 안 될 유산은 히니 역시 조이스처럼 아일랜드의 새로운 양심을 창조하려 했다는 점이다. 결론적으로 히니는 종교나 정치로부터 자유로운 예술 추구와 개선의지 를 특징으로 하는 조이스의 모더니즘정신을 상속받았다고 평가된다.
