The study aims to examine the characteristics of the relics through the characteristics of the ship in the Seokjang-dong petroglyphs in Gyeongju. According to the research so far, Seokjang-dong Petroglyph was established according to the stable supply and demand of water for affluence and its will. Judging from the ship’s symbol, however, a complex symbolism is found that reflects the future view of prehistoric ages, beyond the fragmentary characterization of the site. The ship as an expression of Petroglyph is related to the water cloud and fishery. But the meaning of looking at another side was believed to be communicative with the world through transcendence to and from the unknown world. Thus, the ship in Seokjang-dong has a ceremonial character as a ship of the soul. In this regard, Seokjang-dong petroglyph is a place where the spiritual view of the world intersects to prepare for the view of the future and the wish of a realistic affluence simultaneously. This place has meaning as a complex space that adapts to the cosmological cyclical principles for life, death and beyond.

본 연구는 경주 석장동암각화에 등장하는 배의 성격을 통하여 유적이 반영하는 고유한 특성을 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 그동안의 연구에 의하여 석장동암각화는 풍요를 위한 물의 안정적 수 급과 그것을 인위적으로 관리하고자 하는 의지에 의해 성립된 유적으로 이해되고 있다. 그러나 배와 같은 표현물의 상징으로 볼 때, 유적은 단편적인 규정을 넘어 삶과 죽음, 그리고 재생이라 고 하는 암각화시대의 내세관을 반영하는 복합적 성격이 있음을 증거하고 있다. 암각화표현물로서 배는 명백하게 수운 및 어로와 관련된다. 그러나 또 다른 축에서 바라보는 그 의미는 미지의 세계를 오가는 초월성으로 하여, 저세상과도 소통할 수 있다고 믿었다. 따라 서 석장동의 배는 영혼의 배라고 하는 의례적 성격을 갖는다. 그런 점에서 석장동암각화 유적은 현실적 풍요기원과 동시에 내세관을 대비하는 정신적 세계관이 교차하는 경계로서 삶과 죽음, 그 너머를 대비한 우주적 순환원리에 순응하는 복합공간으로서 의미를 갖는 곳이다.
