This paper reviewed the meaning of Shim Dae-yoon's (沈大允, 1806~1872) concept of the Gewuzhizhi 格物致知. Shim, a Confucian scholar of the Joseon, claimed that Gewuzhizhi is necessary because of the functional characteristics of human jungsin 精神 & myeongji 明知, and the essential characteristics of the human mind(心) that becomes good or evil according to what one sees. It is also explained that the effect of the Gewuzhizhi is infinite, which allows us to know not only the actual conditions of the human beings(人情) but also the actual conditions of the various events(事情) and the actual conditions of the various things(物情). Furthermore, Shim argued that the Saint(聖人) taught everyone to do zhõng-shù 忠恕 with great effort because it is a miracle principle of moral practice that allows us to do things what we've learned from the Gewuzhizhi, and Gewuzhizhi and zhõng-shù are the great Confucian principles that all the people of the world can benefit(利) and be comfortable(安) together. Shim Dae-yoon's concept of a Gewuzhizhi clearly demonstrates his sense of social problem in the 19th century, when the authority of Confucius fell to the ground and various civil disturbances and oppression caused social chaos. Shim Dae-yoon wanted to break away from the great past of Zhu-Xi(朱熹), who focused on moral righteousness, to redefine the Tao of Confucius as something that could make beneficial and comfortable of the people. To this end, Shim wanted to preach the core concept of Confucius, Gewuzhizhi, to the general public as an easy and simple practical way of doing zhõng-shù.

이 글은 19세기 조선의 유학자 심대윤(沈大允, 1806~1872)의 격물치지(格物致知) 개념의 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 심대윤의 격물치지 개념은 인간이 지닌 정신(精神)과 명지(明知)의 기능적 특성과 본 것에 따라 선해지거나 악해지는 인간의 마음의 본질적 특성에 의해 그 논리적 과정과 필요성이 설명되고 있으며, 격물치지의 효과는 인간의 실정[人情]은 물론이고 온 천하의 각종 사태의 실정[事情] 및 사물의 실정[物情]까지 두루 통하여 알 수 있게 해주는 무궁무진한 것으로 규정되고 있다. 나아가 심대윤은 성인이 자신이 격물치지를 통해 안 바를 천하의 뭇 사람들 또한 쉽게 시행할 수 있게 해주는 실천의 묘리로서 대중들에게 충서(忠恕)를 힘써 행할 것을 가르쳤다고 주장하며, 격물치지와 충서는 천하의 사람들이 모두 함께 이로워지고[利] 편안해지는[安] 위대한 유학의 도(道)라고 주장한다. 이와 같은 심대윤의 격물치지 개념은, 대중들로부터 유학의 권위가 땅에 떨어지고 각종 민란과 탄압으로 사회적 혼란이 극심했던 19세기에 살았던 심대윤의 시대적 문제의식을 여실히 보여준다 하겠다. 심대윤은 이론적 의리 논변을 중시했던 송나라 주희라는 과거의 거대한 굴레를 벗어나 유학의 도를 대중들의 삶을 이롭고[利] 편안하게[安] 해줄 수 있는 것으로서 재정립하고자 하였으며, 이를 위해 격물치지라는 유학의 핵심 개념을 대중들에게 충서라는 쉽고 단순한 실천적 요령으로써 설파하고자 하였던 것이다.
