The purpose of this study was to identify the path of self-neglect of the older-old adults living alone, and to provide data for preparing policy and practice for the elderly living alone. This study focused on the mechanisms of social support and depression caused by self-neglect to establish a path model of self-neglect for the older-old adults living alone. The analysis was performed by a path analysis of structural equational model. The results showed that the self-neglect of the elderly living alone was directly caused by social support and depression or by social support through depression. In addition, economic and health conditions were found that those directly affect depression. Therefore, the path leading to self-neglect of the elderly living alone seems to have a effect on social support, economic and health conditions and depression. This study is meaningful in that it has helped to understand the self-neglect behavior of the elderly living alone by grasping the path of self-neglect of the elderly living alone.

본 연구의 목적은 고령 독거노인의 자기방임 발생 경로를 파악, 자기방임 위험이 높은 고령 독 거노인들에 대한 정책적, 실천적 대응방안 마련을 위한 기초자료를 제공하는 것이다. 본 연구는 특 히 사회적 지지와 우울이 자기방임을 일으키는 메커니즘에 주목해 자기방임의 경로모형을 설정하 고, 고령 독거노인들을 대상으로 구조방정식 경로분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과 고령 독거노인의 자 기방임은 사회적 지지 및 우울이 직접적으로, 혹은 사회적 지지가 우울을 매개로 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 그간 자기방임의 직접적 원인 규명에만 머물렀던 관련 분야에서 자기방임의 발생 경로를 새롭게 파악함으로써 고령 독거노인의 자기방임 행위를 보다 체계적으로 이해할 수 있는 근거를 제시했다는 점에서 의의가 있다 할 수 있겠다.
