The purpose of this study is to analyze monetary aspects as a list of items in Korean letters around the 20th century. In 1884, Ujeongchongguk(General Bureau of Post and Telecommunications) was established, and the history of modern postal service began. However, with the collapse of enlightenment party(which led the service) and the corruption of Korean postal service into a means of colonial invasion by Japanese imperialism, the service has been lame for quite some time. Although the postal parcel service in 1900 and the postal money order service in 1911 were carried out, the settlement process of this system was slow. The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of this phenomenon by analyzing the patterns of the list of items in the letter. This is because it is possible to grasp the settlement process of the parcel service through the analysis of the list of items of daily necessities and the settlement process of the postal money service through the analysis of the list of items of money. As a result of analyzing the pattern of money as list of items, it was confirmed that the paradigm of the common economy has already been converted from the barter economy to the currency exchange economy at the end of the 19th century. However, the gap between the value of money and the value of circulation, the shortage of money, and the collapse of the common economy by the Japanese exploitation have hindered the vitalization of the currency exchange economy. As a result, the postal money order service enforced in 1911 has also been cripped for a long time.

본 연구는 20세기 전후 한글 편지에 나타난 물목(物目)으로서의 화폐 양상을 실증적으로 검토하는 데 목적이 있다. 1884년 우정총국(郵政總局)이 개설되면서 한국의 근대적인 우정의 역사가 시작되었다. 하지만 이를 주도한 개화파가 몰락하고 일제에 의해 한국의 우정사업이 식민지 침탈의 수단으로 변질되면서 상당기간 파행을 거듭하게 되었다. 전병용(2018)에서 편지 전달의 변화 양상을 다뤘는데, 인편과 우편이 1920년대 중반까지 공존하였으며 이러한 연유가 편지와 함께 전달되었던 물품에 있다고 추정한 바 있다. 1900년 우편소포(郵便小包) 사업, 1911년 우편위체(郵便爲替) 사업이 시행되었지만 이 제도의 정착은 더디게 진행되었다. 본 연구는 편지에 나타난 물목의 양상을 분석함으로써 이러한 현상의 원인을 파악하고자 하였다. 생필품의 물목 분석을 통해 우편소포 사업의 정착과정을, 화폐의 물목 분석을 통해 우편위체 사업의 정착과정을 파악할 수 있기 때문이다. 물목으로서의 화폐 양상을 분석한 결과 서민경제의 패러다임이 19세기 말에 이미 물물교환 경제에서 화폐교환 경제로 전환되고 있음을 확인하였다. 하지만 화폐의 소재가치와 유통가치의 괴리, 화폐 품귀 현상, 일제의 수탈에 의한 서민 경제의 몰락 등이 화폐교환 경제의 활성화를 가로막게 되었다. 이 결과 1911년에 시행된 우편위체 사업도 상당기간 파행을 거듭할 수밖에 없었다.
