Gangneung Madam Yeonhwa Folk Tales based on Silla Poetry 「Myeongjuga」 is a match(marriage) story between a young Confucianist Mu Wolang and a good family’s daughter Yeonhwa and is the progenitor folk tale of Gangneung Kim Clan, which is deeply related to the birth of King Myeongjugunwang, Kim Ju-won who is the progenitor of Gangneung Kim Clan. This story is told in 『Goryeosa(高麗史)』 「Myeongjuga」 and Heogyun’s 『Seongsobubugo』 「Byeolyeonsagojeokgi(鼈淵寺古迹記)」, but the content is different from each other because there are different versions. Based on this, this study was to firstly examine the so-far results of the studies on Gangneung Madam Yeonhwa Folk Tales, rather than identifying that the content of all the data is different from each other. And to conclude, the studies on Gangneung Madam Yeonhwa Folk Tales were relative few. In addition, this study looked into diachronically how Gangneung Madam Yeonhwa Folk Tales have been passed down in a historical context. In addition, this study clearly found out the difference in the content of various related books such as 『Goryeosa(高麗史)』 「Myeongjuga」 and Heogyun’s 『Seongsobubugo』 「Byeolyeonsagojeokgi(鼈淵寺古迹記)」. At the same time, it chronologically compared the aspects of the 1920s-30s, the 1950s, and modern times. Therefore, this study summarized the content of the documents and the materials that have been handed down by periods. As a result, in the reality that human emotion is commercialized in this era, it is the discovery that Gangneung Madam Yeonhwa Folk Tales are the most lyrical cultural contents. This study pointed out that relatively much research has not been conducted despite the fact that these literatures have enough value, in order to boost more research on this, while expecting it will used as a basic research data for the researchers of Gangneung Madam Yeonhwa Folk Tales.

강릉연화부인 설화는 신라 가요 「명주가」를 그 배경으로 삼고 있다. 그 당시 명주(溟州:지금의 강릉)지방에 전해지는 서생(書生) 무월랑과 양가의 규수 연화낭자 사이에 이루어진 결연(혼인)설화이면서 강릉김씨 시조 명주군왕 김주원 공의 탄생과 직접적인 관련이 있다. 이 설화는 『고려사(高麗史)』 「명주가」와 허균의 『성소부부고』 「별연사고적기(鼈淵寺古迹記)」에서 전해지고 있으나 그 내용이 조금씩 변형되어 전한다. 이 논문의 지향점은 강릉연화부인 설화의 역사적 맥락을 통시적으로 살펴봄으로써, 각각의 시대별로 어떻게 변형되어 전승되었으며, 또 어떤 차이점이 있는지를 규명하는 데 있다. 따라서 ‘『고려사(高麗史)』 「명주가」 배경설화’, ‘『성소부부고』 별연사고적기(鼈淵寺古迹記)’, ‘1920~30년대 배경설화’, ‘1950년대 배경설화’, ‘북한의 연화부인 이야기’, ‘음마장성굴행과의 관련성’을 통시적 살펴보았다. 그 결과 연화부인과 무월랑의 결연설화라는 대전제는 각각의 시대별로 전승된 이야기들과 동일하다는 것이며, 설화의 공간적 배경은 강릉과 경주라는 공통점을 드러냈다. 또 결말에 이르러 극적인 혼사가 성사되는 장면도 각각의 시대별로 유사성을 보여주었다. 다만 전승 과정의 내용을 비교 대상으로 삼지 않은 것은 중국 ‘음마장성굴행과의 관련성’이다. 이것은 비교 대상으로 삼을 수도 있으나 ‘강릉연화부인 설화’와 중국 ‘음마장성굴행’의 결연 매개체가 신어(神魚)라는 공통점 발견에 주안점을 두었기 때문이다. 또한 『고려사(高麗史)』 「명주가」를 원전으로 전제할 때 『성소부부고』 별연사고적기(鼈淵寺古迹記)’를 포함하여 ‘음마장성굴행과의 관련성’까지 강릉 연화부인 설화의 이야기가 원형이 잘 보존된 상태로 전승되었다. 즉 변질하지 않은 상태로 그 생명이 유지되어왔다. 또 이 글은 작금의 시대에 문학과 관련된 소재들이 상품화되어 가는 현실에서 강릉연화부인 설화도 가장 서정적인 문화콘텐츠로서 충분한 가치를 지니고 있다는 사실을 인식시키는 데 있다. 그럼으로써 향후 ‘강릉 연화부인 설화’가 문화콘텐츠 작업에 기초적인 자료와 교육의 도구로 활용되길 기대한다.
