The current study aimed to explore the changes in Japanese people’s perception of the March First Movement in post󰠏war Japan. Since the end of World War II, the Japanese leftist historians considered that the March First Movement was inspired by the Russian Revolution and the same failed due to bourgeois nationalist leaders, who misguided it. This view was established by joint struggle of the Japanese Communist Party and Zainichi Korean leftist organizations, and historical study in North Korea. In addition, the Japanese leftist historians also argued that the March First Movement was caused by advanced social movements in Japan. The conservative, pro󰠏Korean Japanese scholars asserted that Korean nationalist movement leaders depended on the Japanese empire rather than opposing it. Challenging these views, in 1969, Kajimura Hideki problematized previous leftist historians’ interpretations, arguing for revisions to the previous scholarship. Furthermore, Pak Kyŏng󰠏sik published an article in 1970 evaluating the nationalists who participated in the March First Movement and the Declaration of Independence. Besides this, in 1976, Wada Haruki argued that the Declaration of Independence was a document that posed a question to the Japanese. Wada recognized the significance of the document, which advocated an investigation on injustice and peace that prevailed in East Asia. He also stated that the Declaration of Independence should be introduced in Japanese history textbooks. There continues to be a lack of understanding of the March First Movement in Japan. The ideology behind the movement has not only been ignored, but has been merely interpreted as being anti󰠏Japanese. In such a socio󰠏historical atmosphere, the history of the March First Movement and the content of the Declaration of Independence need to be spread among more Japanese people.

본고는 전후 일본에서 일본인이 3‧1운동을 어떻게 인식해왔는지에 대해서, 그 변천과정을 규명하였다. 전후 직후부터 좌파 계열의 일본인 역사학자 사이에서는 3‧1운동이 러시아 혁명의 영향에 의해서 일어났지만, 부르주아 민족주의자들의 불충분한 지도로 인해서 실패한 운동이라고 간주되어 왔다. 이는 좌파 계열의 재 일조선인단체와 일본공산당의 공동투쟁이나 북한 역사학의 영향에 기반한 견해였 다. 또한, 좌파 계열의 일본인 역사학자들은 당시 일본의 선진적인 사회운동이 조 선에 영향을 미쳐서 3‧1운동이 일어났다는 인식도 보였다. 한편, 친한(親韓) 성향 의 보수파 일본인들은 민족운동 지도자들이 오히려 일본제국에 기대감을 품고 있 었다는 해석을 내놓았다. 이러한 가운데, 1969년 가지무라 히데키(梶村秀樹)는 기존의 좌파계열 역사학 자들의 견해를 수정해야 한다고 주장했다. 또한, 1970년에는 박경식(朴慶植)이 3‧1 운동의 민족지도자나 선언서에 대해서 적극적으로 평가한 논문을 발표했다. 나아 가 1976년, 와다 하루키(和田春樹)는 선언서가 일본인에게 던지는 물음으로, 부정 의(不正義)를 밝히고 동아시아의 평화를 호소하는 더없이 중요한 문서라는 점을 지적하고, 이를 일본의 역사교과서에 소개해야 한다고 주장했다. 그러나 현재도 여전히 일본에서는 3‧1운동에 대한 이해가 충분하다고는 보기 어렵다. 3‧1운동에 담긴 사상은 무시되고, 반일운동으로서만 인식되고 있다. 그러 한 가운데, 현재 3‧1운동의 역사나 선언서의 내용을 보다 많은 일본인에게 전달 해야 한다는 목소리가 높아지고 있다.
