This paper investigates the cinema literacy that represents the deficiencies in characters in the movie Burning. The aim is to study how the three nonfictional characters build bonds with the reality and the deficiency therewithin has twofold and simultaneous meanings. Specifically, the study will focus on the close relationship among the three characters in relation with the fundamental deficiencies of human beings that are represented through the poor and the rich, reality and ideality, body and spirit, and the visible and the invisible. In the movie, deficiency is depicted like a double-sided coin in the relationship between Jongsoo and Ben, who symbolizes the two ends of the young generations. Such thematic meanings forms metaphors through the movie to represent the anger of losing the meaning and value of life in the capitalistic and competitive modern society as well as the nihilistic view on the lethargy and salvation therein. Furthermore, the deficiency expands socially and historically in the relationship among the characters solely by coincidence with no causal links. Meanwhile, throughout the movie, the theme of deficiency is depicted through literature metaphors, such as pantomime, well, greenhouse and writing. The four metaphors symbolize the deficiency that cannot be actualized with the duality of the reality and ideality, the body and spirit, and the proof and reason, in social and historic space and time. The duality in the deficiency of characters produce semantic context of simultaneity of realistic and idealistic events on the boundary between the proof and reason by coincidences. The movie analysis is concluded with a reference to the theory of synchronicity of Carl Jung, leaving the necessity for further analysis on the loss of actual existence and nihilism of the modern women who are unable to actualize the great hunger that Haemi seeks for in the movie.

이 연구는 영화 <버닝> 속 인물의 결핍에 관한 시네마 리터러시에 주목한다. 세 인물이 실존적 인물로서 현실과 관계 맺고 있는 결핍이 어떻게 이중적이고 동시적인 의미를 내포하고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 가난과 부자, 현실과 이상, 몸과 정신, 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것에서 느끼는 인간의 근원적인 결핍에 대한 세 인물의 유기적 관계에 주목할 것이다. 이 영화에서 결핍은 종수와 벤의 관계에 있어서 현대사회 젊은 세대의 양축으로서 동전의 양면과 같은 존재다. 두 사람은 종수의 글쓰기 행위를 통해서 하나로서 전체를 이루고 있다. 해미는 현대 여성의 실존적, 존재적 시선이 아니라 물질적, 실증적 시선으로 대상화된다. 이러한 주제적 의미가 영화 속 메타포들로 구성됨으로써 자본이 경쟁력인 현대 사회에서 삶의 의미와 가치를 상실한 분노와 무기력과 구원에 대한 허무주의적 태도로 전개된다. 또한 이들의 관계는 인과론과 관계없이 우연에 의해 그들의 결핍이 사회적, 역사적으로 확장한다. 한편 영화 속에서 결핍은 문학적 메타포로 채워진다. 영화에서 결핍과 관련되는 메타포는 판토마임, 우물, 비닐하우스, 글쓰기이다. 네 가지 메타포는 결핍에 대한 상징으로써 사회적이고 역사적인 현재의 공간 속에서 현실과 이상, 몸과 정신, 실증과 사유의 이중성으로 실현될 수 없는 것이다. 이들 결핍의 이중성은 우연에 의한 실증과 사유의 경계에서 현실적이고 이상적인 사건이 동시성으로 의미맥락을 생산한다. 이 지점에서 칼 융의 동시성이론을 차용하여 영화읽기를 마무리하면서 해미가 찾고자 했던 그레이트 헝거를 실현할 수 없는 현대 여성들의 실존적 상실과 허무에 대한 후속 연구를 남겨두고자 한다.
