The Story of Shim Cheong by Na Manseong is a modern play published in 『Honampyeongnon』 in 1935. Na Manseong, as the editor of 『Honampyeongnon』, adapted The Story of Shim Cheong into a three-act tragedy. During the Japanese colonial period, the performance of The Story of Shim Cheong was still active. In addition, the genre changes of The Story of Shim Cheong have appeared in various fields such as Pansori, drama(play), film(scenario) and radio broadcasting. However, the adaptation scripts of The Story of Shim Cheong among those scripts remain rare. Although the record of The Story of Shim Cheong by Na Manseong was not actually found, it is very valuable because it remains in the form of adaptation script. This study focuses on the process in which the classic The Story of Shim Cheong is adapted into the tragedy The Story of Shim Cheong, and examines its meaning and status.

나만성 <심청전>은 1935년 『호남평론』에 게재된 근대 희곡이다. 『호남평론』의 편집자였던 나만성은 전래의 <심청전>을 각색하여 3막의 비극 대본으로 정리했다. 일제강점기 <심청전> 공연은 여전히 활발하게 이루어졌고, 그 장르적 변이 역시 판소리, 연극(희곡), 영화(시나리오), 라디오 방송 분야에서 다양하게 나타난 바 있다. 하지만 각색 대본 중에서 현재까지 남아있는 경우는 드물었다. 비록 나만성 <심청전>이 실제로 공연된 기록은 발견되지 않았으나, 각색 희곡의 형태로 남아있다는 점에서 그 가치는 매우 크다고 할 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 고전 <심청전>이 비극 <심청전>으로 개작되는 과정에 주목하여 그 의미와 위상을 살펴보고자 한다.
