The purpose of this study is, by paying attention to the honorific expressions that may hurt the other person’s feelings or damage the interpersonal relationships with others, to discover their pragmatic features and meanings. In this study, these features are called “non-honorific functions” in that they threaten the listener to lose his/her face, and are examined based on drama scenarios to discover what kind of non-honorifics there are. As a result, non-honorific functions could be classified as warnings, complaints, and criticisms. Plus, we approached with a perspective of felicity conditions to discover their pragmatic meanings, where we set new standards for complaints and criticisms which do not belong to the sub-classes of felicity conditions in this paper. This shows that honorific expressions that have functions of warning, complaints, and criticisms do not deviate from the above criteria. This seems to be the results of linguistic activities based on pragmatic thinking such as felicity conditions to minimize the instance of threatening one to lose his/her face with the use of the honorific expressions that have functions of warnings, complaints, and criticisms.

본 연구는 상대방의 기분을 상하게 하거나 상대방과의 인간관계를 해칠 수 있는 기능을 지닌 경어표현에 주목하여 이들의 화용론적 특징과 의미를 밝히는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이런 기능이 상대방의 체면을 위협한다는 점에서 ‘비경어적 기능’이라고 부르고, 여기에 어떤 종류가 있는지 밝히기 위해 드라마 시나리오를 토대로 분석했다. 그 결과, 비경어적 기능을 경고, 항의, 비난기능으로 분류할 수 있었다. 그리고 이들의 화용론적 의미를 밝히기 위해 적절성 조건의 관점에서 접근했는데, 이 과정에서 적절성 조건의 하위분류에 속하지 않는 항의, 비난기능에 대해서는 본고에서 기준을 새로 설정했다. 이를 통해 경고, 항의, 비난기능을 지닌 경어표현이 위와 같은 기준에서 크게 벗어나지 않는다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이는 경고, 항의, 비난기능을 지닌 경어표현의 사용으로 상대방의 체면을 위협하는 것을 최소화하기 위해 적절성 조건과 같은 화용론적 사고에 기초하여 언어활동을 한 결과인 것으로 보인다.
