This paper is designed to review the Korean bibliography used in the List of Korean Literature, which is written by a French writer called Maurice Courantin the late 19th century, and to evaluate its value from a Korean linguistics perspective. Maurice Courant’s Korean bibliography is a comprehensive list of Korean literary releases, including a list of various literary works from Korean classics to early 20th century works, as well as encompassing Courant’s comments on them. A considerable part of this is comprised of contents on the Korean literature, which requires consideration from the perspective of Korean literature or Korean linguistics. In particular, the Korean bibliography’s list of Korean texts is the first of its kind in recent years, and is believed to have had a direct and indirect influence on the list of other Korean texts. In this paper, 590 out of 3,821 pieces of literature, which are the full list of the books, were found to be Korean literature by reviewing the list and the relevant articles of the main body in the Korean bibliography, and the patterns and characteristics of the literature’s distribution in the Courant literature classification system would be also clarified in this paper. Furthermore, the meaning and value of Korean bibliography would be evaluated from the perspective of Korean linguistics by comparing it with the list of other Korean language history data from the Korean bibliography.

이 논문은 19세기말 프랑스인 모리스 쿠랑의 저술 『한국서지(Bibliographie Coréenne)』에 나타난 한글문헌 목록을 검토하여 국어사적 입장에서 그 가치를 평가해 보고자 한 것이다. 모리스 쿠랑의 『한국서지』는 한국의 고 전적에서부터 20세기 초까 지의 각종 문헌류에 대한 목록과 서지, 해제 그리고 그에 대한 쿠랑의 논평이 종합적 으로 실려 있는 한국 문헌 해제 목록서이다. 이 중에서 상당한 부분이 한글문헌에 대한 내용으로 구성되어 있어 한글문헌학 또는 국어사적 입장에서 검토를 요한다. 특히 『한국서지』의 한글문헌 목록은 근세기 최초의 한글문헌에 대한 해제 목록으로서 이 후의 타 한글문헌 목록에도 직․간접적 영향을 끼친 것으로 판단된다. 본 논문에서는 『한국서지』 내의 본론 부분에 해당하는 문헌 목록과 해제 부분을 검토하여 이 책의 전체 목록인 3,821종의 문헌 중 590종이 한글문헌임을 밝히고, 이들의 분포가 쿠랑의 문헌 분류 체계상에서 어떻게 분포하는지 그 양상과 특징을 알아보았다. 또한 『한국 서지』의 한글문헌 목록과 이후의 다른 국어사 자료 연구서 또는 문헌 목록을 비교해 봄으로써 『한국서지』의 한글문헌 목록이 국어사 분야에서 어떠한 의미와 가치를 지니는지 평가해 보았다
