This study aims to interpret the Epic of Gilgamesh and compare its theme of human maturity with Transhumanist discussions on the human enhancement, whereby it seeks to demonstrate the possibility and the value of classical education in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the story of heroes growing up from selfish, violent, uncontrolled, crafty men with power to self-reflective, compassionate, mature rulers being responsible for the community. This story gives insight to the pros and cons of Transhumanism’s human enhancement which seeks to go beyond the intellectual, emotional and physical limitations of humans through science and technology. This paper's attempt to explore the Epic of Gilgamesh in the context of human enhancement helps to understand the human maturity, that is, what it means to become a human and a ‘better human’ in the community, and to disclose the hidden desires behind the motivation for being ‘a perfect person’ in Transhumanism. This study can be evaluated as an example of attesting how classical education fits the goals of liberal education even in the era of science and technology.

이 논문은 길가메쉬 서사시와 그것의 인간 성숙 주제를 오늘날의 트랜스 휴머니즘의 인간 향상 논의와 비교하여 해석하고, 이를 통해 이른바 제4차 산업혁명 시대에 고전교육의 교양교육 적 가능성과 가치를 드러내는 것을 목적으로 한다. 길가메쉬 서사시는 영웅의 성숙이야기를 통해 신체와 지략면에서 ‘완벽’하지만 이기적이며 폭력적이고 통제되지 않은 교활한 인간이, 자기 반성적이고 연민을 가진 공동체에 책임적인 성숙 한 인간이 되는 과정을 그린다. 이것은 과학기술을 통해 현재 인간의 지적, 정서적, 신체적 한계 를 넘어서려는 트랜스휴머니즘의 인간 향상을 둘러싼 찬반 논의에 통찰을 준다. 트랜스휴머니즘의 인간 향상 담론의 배경에서 길가메쉬 서사시를 읽으려는 이 논문의 시도는 인간 성숙, 곧 인간이 된다는 것과 공동체에서 ‘더 나은 인간’이 된다는 것이 무엇인지를 이해하 도록 하고, 또 트랜스휴머니즘이 지향하는 ‘완벽한 인간’이 되려는 동기 배후에 숨은 타인 지배 욕망을 비판적으로 드러낸다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 고전 교육이 과학기술시대에도 교양 교육의 목표에 알맞게 부합한다는 것을 보여주는 하나의 사례로 평가될 수 있다.
