The classics are imbued with a philosophy of inquiring what “a good life” and “being human” means and serves, thereby, as an adequate tool for character education. Accordingly, the meaning of “being human” that corresponds with the overall goal of (Korean college) elective courses can be understood as indicating the formation of an individual who, through introspection, establishes his or her own self-identity and contributes to humanity by pursuing “a good life” where he or she coexists with others in harmony as free human beings. For this purpose, a curriculum that can broaden the spectrum of individual conscience is required. Through a study of the classics, one can ascertain, rectify, and restructure his or her conscience through deliberating with others matters regarding life and values. This study introduces the goal and operation characteristics of the ‘Great Books Reading Seminar,’ an academic course for cultivating good-oriented individuals at Seoul National University, and evaluates the efficacy of the course. One main characteristic of the ‘Great Books Reading Seminar’ is not to instruct dogmatic belief of a virtuous conscience, but rather to provide an opportunity for the students to explore and introspect matters regarding life and values themselves through a reading of the classics, active participation (including activities such as presentation, discussion, and experimentation), and application of the coursework in the students’ own lives. In evaluating the efficacy of the course, analysis of the survey conducted on the students show that the desired result was achieved. Some of the methods used include an inquiry of the topic through readings of consecutive volumes, dictation and lecture by an instructor, and activities such as presentation and discussion. In the case of Seoul National University in particular, the result of this study supports the case made for the introduction of professional instructors, as majority of the courses provided by adjunct professors indicate clear, positive results in terms of sustainability and stability. In implementing the proposals mentioned herein for potential improvement (installment as a regular-semester course, approval to register multiple courses, etc.), the effectiveness of character education that implements a reading of the classics will be bolstered.

고전에 담겨있는 ‘좋은 삶’과 ‘인간다움’에 대한 성찰은 인성교육에 주효하다. ‘교양교육의 목표’ 에 부합하는 ‘인간다움’은 ‘성찰하는 인간’으로‘ 자기주체성을 확립하고 자유인으로서 타인과 조화 를 이루어 좋은 삶을 추구함으로써 인류 공영에 기여하는 인간이라고 할 수 있다. 이를 위해서 인식의 지평을 확장할 수 있는 교육 과정이 필요하다. 고전 읽기를 통해 삶과 가치의 문제를 타인 과 소통함으로써 자기 인식을 확인하고 교정하며 재형성해 갈 수 있다. 이 연구는 서울대의 선한인재양성을 위한 교과목, <독서세미나-고전에 길을 묻다>의 목표 및 운영 특성을 소개하고 운영효과를 검토하였다. 이 교과목의 특성은 교조적인 인성 덕목의 훈계 가 아니라 ‘고전 읽기’, ‘능동적 참여(발표와 토론 경험과 체험 등의 활동)’, ‘자기 삶에 적용’을 통해 삶과 가치에 대한 탐색과 성찰을 심화할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이다. 운영효과로서 수강생 설문조사를 분석한 결과 수업 목표를 잘 이루었다고 평가된다. 통권읽 기, 교수자의 강독 및 강의, 발표와 토론 및 활동을 통한 주제에 대한 성찰 등이 주효했다고 본 다. 특히 서울대의 경우 강의교수가 운영하는 대다수의 강좌가 지속성과 안정성 면에서 확연한 성과를 보이고 있는 점을 볼 때 전문교수제 도입의 필요성을 확인했다. 발전과제로 제안한 내용 (정규학기 개설, 복수강좌 수강 허용 등)을 실현함으로써 고전교육을 활용한 인성교육의 효과는 보다 극대화될 것이다.
