This study set out to investigate the calendar years of Protestant Church in South Korea based on the year that the Sorae Church was founded. There are various opinions about the criteria used to set the calendar years of Protestant Church, and it is not easy to reach an agreement among them. In the calendar of Protestant Church, the Sorae Church is recognized as its first church even though it was in the stage of faith community. There are different opinions regarding the year of its establishment among 1883, 1884, and 1885. The investigator concluded that it was founded in 1885 at the earliest. There can be, of course, objections to the conclusion, but it is inevitable to make the estimation based on the objective data so far. The Sorae Church celebrated its “40 anniversary” in 1925 and its “50th anniversary” in 1933 due to its internal discussions and grounds, despite which the investigate still finds it difficult to accept it. In October, 1925, its founder Seo Gyeong-jo published Seo Gyeong-Jo's Believers and Evangelism and the Sorae Church's History of Foundation that arranged the history of the Sorae Church, which held a ceremony to celebrate its “40th anniversary” in August of the same year. It is the most reliable source of data so far. He moved to Shanghai, China the next year, and the foundation year of the church was changed to 1883 in the year of 1933. It is up to a church's own judgment to determine which criteria should be applied to determine the time of its foundation. The criteria are diverse with regard to the year of establishment among the Protestant churches with long history. It is not a matter in which a uniform set of criteria can be applied. The Sorae Church has, however, different circumstances since it is a church of public nature that holds huge importance and significance in the history of South Korean Protestantism. The calendar years of Protestant Church in South Korea will be different according to the year of its foundation. If the church's believers expand the year of its foundation to 1883 and decide to celebrate accordingly, their decision should be respected. In the position of history majors, however, it is possible to voice different opinions. The investigator estimates that the Sorae Church was founded in 1885 at the earliest.

이 논문은 소래교회의 설립연대를 통해 한국 개신교회의 기년을 살펴본 것이다. 개신교의 기년을 어떤 기준으로 잡을 것인가에 대 해서는 다양한 의견이 있으며 그 일치를 보기도 쉽지 않다. 그럼에 도 한국 개신교회의 기년은, 비록 신앙공동체 정도의 단계라 해도 소래교회를 최초의 교회로 인정하고 있는 것이 대세이다. 그런데 그 소래교회의 설립연대를 1883년･1884년･1885년 중 무엇으로 볼 것인가에 대해서도 이견이 있다. 필자는 그 연대가 빨 라야 1885년이라고 단정한다. 물론 반론이 나올 수 있지만 현재까지의 객관적 자료로 볼 때는 그렇게 추정할 수밖에 없다. 1925년 “창립 40주년”을 기념했던 소래교회에서 1933년 “창립 50주년”을 기념한 것은, 교회 내부의 논의와 근거가 있었다 해도 필자는 인정 하기 힘들다. 설립자인 서경조가 1925년 10월 소래교회의 역사를 정리한 ｢서경조의 신도와 전도와 소래교회의 설립역사｣를 발표했 고, 같은해 8월 “교회창립 40주년” 기념행사를 거행했다. 이것이 현재로서는 가장 신뢰할 만한 자료이다. 어느 교회의 설립시기를 어떤 기준에 따라 어떻게 설정할 것인가 는 그 교회의 자체적 판단에 따를 수밖에 없다. 실제로 현재 오랜 역사를 가진 개신교회의 설립연대를 보면 그 기준이 다양하다. 그 렇다고 해서 획일적인 기준을 갖고 재단할 수 있는 사안도 아니다. 하지만 소래교회는 사정이 다르다. 한국 개신교 역사에서 차지하 는 비중과 의미가 매우 큰, 공적(公的)인 성격을 갖는 교회이기 때 문이다. 그 설립연대가 언제냐에 따라 한국 개신교회의 기년이 달 라진다. 그 교회 교인들이 1883년을 설립연대로 확정하여 기념한 다 해도 그것은 나름대로 존중되어야 하지만, 역사학을 전공하는 입장에서는 그와 다른 의견을 개진할 수 있다. 소래교회의 설립연 대는 빨라야 1885년이다.
