This study is focused on the characteristic features and symbolism of the green-glazed tile in the shape of water wave excavated at the Sacheonwangsa Temple site. The first part of the main discussion deals with the glaze used for the green-glazed tile which created glass-like surface when the tile was baked. It is presumed from the manufacturing technique, components and utilization of the glaze that the effect of the glaze should have been very similar as that of the glasses discovered at the Mireuksa Temple site in Iksan. In the second part, it is concluded that the green-glazed title of Sacheonwangsa Temple, which has been referred to as "the tile in the shape of a thousand birds" or "water caltrop tile", was originally made to have the shape of water wave. The conclusion is based on the comparison of the tile with the wave motif decorating the floor of the Tachibana Shrine in the Horyuji Temple, Japan. As for its symbolism, the tile is compared with the green-glazed tiles with incised wave patterns discovered at the Kawaradera Urayama site in Japan. The final part of the discussion focuses on the symbolic meaning and utilization of the green-glazed tile of Sacheonwangsa Temple. It concludes that, considering that the lead glaze used in ancient East Asia was called "glass", the use of the green-glazed tiles for Buddhist temple buildings was to materialize the Buddha's Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli in this world. It also concludes that the green-glazed tile in the shape of water was used to represent the "glass pond" in the pure land of Buddha.
