Zhou Daguan's The Customs of Cambodia is not only a social and cultural value that allows the Chinese to take a closer look at the lives of the Cambodian people in the 13th century, but also a literary value that can identify the Chinese people's perception of Cambodia and the way it was reproduced. The book is a record of Zhou Daguan, who lived as a Han Chinese official under the special circumstances of savage people's domination of China and its long-term experience in a strange place(or savage people's place), and is an important evidence to understand the acceptance and re-awareness of traditional Sino-centrism. It provided an opportunity to find out to a certain extent whether the Chinese, who have lived in a harmonious world view, were properly aware of the nature of Southeast Asian society, which features plurality, middle and complexity, and were recognizing the individuality of the all communities, or were still deploying these countries in a self-completed Chinese world order featuring the Zogong-Chaekbong system. Using Zhou Daguan's The Customs of Cambodia as the basic text, I examined how the Chinese interpreted and reproduced the society of the Angkor Kingdom and the way people lived, and at the same time, the Angkor society and its people's perception of and eyes on the Chinese people.

원나라 사람 주달관은 원 초기 국가의 명으로 동남아지역의 眞臘國으로 파견되어 약 1년 동안 생활하게 되었고, 귀국한 뒤 진랍국에서 체험한 것들을 기록하여 󰡔眞臘風土記󰡕라는 제목으로 견문록을 출판했다. 이 책은 중국인에 의해 13세기 캄보디아 사람들의 삶을 상세하게 살펴볼 수 있는 사회ㆍ문화적 가치뿐 아니라, 캄보디아에 대한 당시 중국인의 인식을 파악할 수 있는 문헌적 가치 역시 지니고 있다. 이 책은 오랑캐 ｢夷｣의 중국 지배와 異域(혹은 夷域)에서의 장기간 현지 체험이라는 특수 상황에서 한족 관원 신분으로 살았던 주달관의 기록으로, 전통적인 華夷 관념의 수용과 재인식의 양상을 파악할 수 있는 중요한 증거자료이다. 이 책은 바로 화이적 세계관 속에서 살아왔던 중국인이 다원성, 중층성, 복합성을 특징으로 하는 동남아 사회의 본질을 제대로 파악하고 諸공동체의 개별성을 인식하고 있었는지, 아니면 여전히 조공-책봉 체제를 특징으로 하는 자기 완결적인 중국적 세계질서 속에 동남아 국가들을 배치하고 있었는지를 일정 정도 파악할 수 있는 기회를 제공했다는 데 큰 의의를 둘 수 있다. 이에 필자는 주달관의 󰡔진랍풍토기󰡕를 기본 텍스트로 삼아, 중국인이 앙코르 왕국의 사회와 사람들의 생활 방식을 어떻게 해석하고 재현하고 있는지, 그리고 동시에 앙코르 사회의 중국인에 대한 인식과 시선을 고찰해 보았다.
