This paper focuses on the early activities of the Prierias and the Dominicans, who were relatively neglected in the Luther Affair(Causa Lutheri). The Affair was amplified by the conflict between the Dominicans and the Augustinians. At that time, the Dominicans escorted the papacy, and the Augustinian led reformist changes with the help of Frederick the Elector of Saxony. Tetzel, Prierias, and Cajetan, the Brothers of the Dominican judged Luther's Theses to contain attacks on the Papacy and the Roman Catholic Church. Therefore, they did not try to solve the moral and social problem of abuse of indulgence, but pursue Luther in theology, especially in ecclesiology. In particular, Prierias as Master of the Sacred Palace, who represented the official position of the Vatican, recognized that Luther's Theses contained an allegation denying the papal-centered ecclesiology and highlighted the papacy as a key issue. Luther noticed that it was not only impossible to improve the abuse of indulgence, but also that his writing was interpreted as an attack on the papal primacy. He was also asked for a clear position on the authority of the Pope and the Roman Church. Luther's theological thought became more and more radical within a short period of time. He emphasized the Bible as a criticism of the Pope and the Church, pushing the view of assuring the Pope as the Antichrist. The direction of the Reformation led by Luther could be coordinated and developed through fierce controversies with earliest Catholic opponents.

이 논문은 ‘루터 사건’(Causa Lutheri)에서 상대적으로 소홀했던 프리에리아 스와 도미니쿠스 수도회의 초기 활동에 대해 주목한다. 루터 사건은 교황권을 호위하고 있던 도미니쿠스회와 작센 선제후 주변에서 개혁적인 변화를 이끌고 있던 아우구스티누스회 사이의 갈등 구도로 인해 증폭되었다. 테첼, 프리에리아 스, 그리고 카예탄에 이르기까지 도미니쿠스회 형제들은 루터의 논제에 교황권 과 로마 교회에 대한 공격이 담겨있다고 판단했다. 그로 인해 그들은 면벌부 남 용이라는 도덕적·사회적 문제해결이 아니라, 신학 특히 교회론적 입장에서 루터 를 추궁했다. 특히 교황청의 공식적 입장을 대변한 프리에리아스는 루터의 논제 에 교황 중심의 교회론을 부정하는 주장이 담겼음을 간파하고 교황권 문제를 핵심 쟁점으로 부각시켰다. 루터는 그의 글을 통해 면벌부 남용에 대한 개선이 불가능할 뿐 아니라, 자신의 글이 교황권에 대한 공격으로 해석된다는 사실을 파악하게 되었다. 그는 또한 교황 및 교회의 권위에 대해 분명한 입장도 점차 요구받았다. 루터의 신학사상은 이처럼 궁지에 몰리면서 단기간 내에 더욱 급진 화되었다. 그는 교황과 교회 권위를 비판하는 준거로서 성경을 더욱 강조하게 되었으며, 교황을 적그리스도로 확신하는 관점을 밀고나갔다. 루터가 이끄는 종 교개혁의 방향은 초기 가톨릭 비판자들과의 격렬한 논쟁을 거치면서 조정되고 발전할 수 있었다.
