At the Seventh Korean-Japanese Symposium on Medieval History of Europe, I considered the gender bias problem of medieval religious women. It was not satisfactory, because I paid little attention to the male counterpart. In this paper, I will reconsider changing images of idealistic religious lives, firstly by studying the origin of ascetic lives of the Desert Fathers, secondly by studying The Rule of St. Benedict, and thirdly by studying ‘Vita Apostolica’ movement and revival of anchoritic life. Then, I will focus on writings about the life and miracles of Richard Rolle of Hampole (d.1349). Richard Rolle of Hampole is a good example of a medieval hermit. His social status appeared high, but his writings show his defensive tone. Medieval hermit is/was marginalized too, and the definition of hermit itself is not clear, because it has been changed. His canonization was failed, but his Life and Miracles show us complex images of medieval hermit.

본 논문은 종교 생활의 이상적인 상이 어떻게 변했는가를 살펴보는 것을 목 표로 한다. 이를 위해 우선 사막의 교부들의 살아온 금욕적인 삶의 기원과 성 베네딕트 계율을 검토하고, ‘사도적 삶’을 부활시키고자 했던 움직임에 대해 살 펴본다. 이어서 중세 은둔자의 전형적인 인물인 리차드 롤 (1349년 몰)의 삶과 그가 행한 기적에 대한 논의를 진행한다. 중세 은둔자에 대한 정의는 불분명하 다. 시대마다 은둔자의 모습이 달랐기 때문이다. 리차드 롤의 경우를 통해 이전 시대와 비교하여 중세 말 은둔자의 모습이 어떻게 변했는지 알아볼 수 있다.
