This study aims to analyze Rev. Heung-Jong Choi’s view of prayer in his “Religion of Heart”. Prayer is an ardent invocation or holy act that seeks to activate a true relationship with the Almighty through deliberate communication. This text is based on Ephesians 6:6 and Matthew 26:39ff. Choi’s view of prayer is based heavily on his work “Religion of Heart” published in Jonggyogyeoi Jemyeongsa Gangyeonjip(the great sermon collection by famous pastors and teachers of Christian community) published at July 1922. In chapter 2 of this paper, I attempted to analyze Choi’s basic principle of true prayer such as ‘the prayer in the view of general grace’, ‘the true heart as the deep seat of prayer’, ‘the exemplary prayer of Jesus Christ at Gethsemane’(Matthew 26:39-42), and so forth. Choi laid great emphasis on passionate prayer with a genuine belief in practice of Christian faith and truth. Because he believed that Almighty God will restore holy faith and give abundant grace and mercy on His people. In chapter 3, I concentrated on the five essential elements of the eternal vitality of prayer such as the perfect state of heart in God and the effectiveness of prayer, its transcendence in space and time, the prayer as a good father-son relationship between God and Christian, God’s clear and unequivocal response to prayer, fair opportunity for everyone in the world, and so forth. In addition, I suggest future extensions of this research into Heung-Jong Choi’s other views such as ‘his faith and social movement’, ‘his missionary activities in Siberia and Jeju Island’, ‘his practical ministerial paradigm for lepers’, and so on.

이 연구의 목적은 최흥종 목사의 글 “心의 宗敎”에 나타난 ‘기도관’을 분석하려는 데 있다. 기도는 전능하신 하나님과 의도적으로 상호 교류를 나눔으로써 참된 관계성을 진작하려는 간절한 호소이자 거룩한 행위를 담는다. 그는 에베소서 6장 6절과 마태복음 26장 39절부터 42절까지의 말씀을 본문으로 정하여 이 글을 작성했다. 최흥종의 기도에 대한 관점은 주로 “心의 宗敎”에서 발견할 수 있으며 이 글은 1922년 7월에 발행된 『宗敎界諸名士講演集』(기독교계 저명한 목사들과 교역자들의 설교집)에 수록되어 있다. 이 논문 제2장에서는 최흥종이 주장하는 참된 기도의 기초 원리에 대해 살폈으며, 그 요소들로서 ‘일반은총의 관점에서 본 기도’, ‘기도의 좌소로서의 참 마음’, ‘예수 그리스도의 겟세마네 동산 기도’(마태복음 26:39 이하) 등에 대해 논했다. 최흥종은 기독교 신앙과 진리를 실천하고자 하는 확고부동한 신념에 입각하여 열정적인 기도를 역설했다. 왜냐하면 전능하신 하나님께서 거룩한 믿음을 회복시켜주시고 자기 백성들에게 풍요로운 은총과 자비를 주실 것이라고 확신했기 때문이다. 제3장에서는 기도의 영원한 생명력을 논증하는 다섯 가지의 본질적 요소들을 중심으로 다루었다. 그는 그 요소들로서 ‘하나님을 향한 온전한 불변의 마음과 기도의 유효성’, ‘시공간을 초월하는 기도의 속성’, 하나님과 그리스도인 사이의 좋은 부자(父子) 관계로서의 기도, 기도에 대한 하나님의 명백하고도 분명한 응답, 세상의 모든 사람에게 주어지는 공평무사한 기회로서의 기도 등을 제시했다. 부연하여, 본 연구자는 향후 최흥종에 관한 다른 연구가 더욱 확장되어 ‘그의 신앙과 사회운동’, ‘그의 시베리아와 제주 선교 사역활동’, ‘나환자들을 위한 실천적 목회 패러다임’ 등 여러 연구로 외연 되기를 기대한다.
