In recognition of the growing social demands amid a change of generation, this study aims to investigate the current state of liberal education in college for fostering people with creativity and interdisciplinary competence and measures for improvement. More specifically, this study focuses on an interdisciplinary course titled Discipline and Thinking at Suwon University. Suwon University promotes convergent liberal curricula that lower interdisciplinary and interdepartmental barriers with a goal of cultivating abilities to think holistically and creatively. Discipline and Thinking, a liberal arts course, is a required general education (second-year students) course introduced in 2018 at Suwon University. This course was designed to promote interdisciplinary convergence while retaining the features of a general education course. In this course, students explore the properties, issues, and methodology of foundational studies in multiple fields, including humanities, mathematics, engineering, economics, and philosophy. This study attempts to diagnose the current state of convergence education in college liberal education by reviewing the actual lectures of the course Discipline and Thinking in detail. The results confirmed that Discipline and Thinking is a liberal arts course that can overcome majorcentered education and have a potential as a convergent liberal arts course that can improve students’ “fundamental study skills” by teaching fundamental methodologies of various disciplines, “holistic and comprehensive reasoning skills” through writing assignments, and“communication skills” through discussions and presentations. Moreover, this study identified measures to improve the lecture by analyzing the lecture evaluations (professor, student), based on which we proposed the direction of convergence education as liberal arts education. In other words, we suggested that convergence education should cultivate students’ abilities to engage in interdisciplinary thinking on their own, as opposed to simply delivering interdisciplinary knowledge and should develop a syllabus that encompasses various disciplines with internal consistency, based on which professors should deliver the educational content in a consistent and balanced manner within the scope of an interdisciplinary course that encompasses various educational contents.

이 연구는 변화된 시대 환경 속에서 사회적 요구를 인식함에 따라 창의융합형 인재 양성을 위 한 대학 교양교육의 현황과 개선 방안을 살펴보는 데에 목적이 있다. 구체적으로 본고에서는 수 원대학교의 융합형 교과목인 <학문과 사고> 과목을 중심으로 연구를 수행하였다. <학문과 사고>는 수원대학교에서 2018년에 정식 개설된 교양 필수(2학년 대상) 과목이다. <학문 과 사고>는 인문학·수학·공학·경제학·철학 등 여러 분야에 걸쳐서 기초학문의 성격과 쟁점, 방 법론 등을 탐구하는 과목으로서, 기초학문교과로서의 성격을 갖추면서도 동시에 학제 간 융합을 꾀할 수 있도록 설계되었다. 본고는 이러한 <학문과 사고>의 실제 강의 운영 사례를 세밀하게 살 펴봄으로써 대학 교양교육으로서의 융합교육의 현황을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 <학문과 사고> 과목이 개설된 과정, 과목의 성격 및 실제 수업 운영 방식, 학습자의 글쓰기 및 토론과제 사례를 분석하여 융합형 교양과목이 운용되고 있는 실제 교육 현장의 상황 을 상세히 전달하고 진단하였다. 그 결과 <학문과 사고>는 전공중심주의를 극복할 수 있는 교양과목의 한 사례이자 동시에 다 양한 학문의 기초적 방법론의 학습을 통한 ‘기초학문능력’과, 글쓰기 과제를 통한 ‘총체적·종합 적 사유 능력’, 그리고 토론 및 발표를 통한 ‘의사소통 능력’ 신장을 위한 융합형 교양교과목으로 서의 의의를 지니고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다 아울러 이 연구에서는 학습자의 강의평가 결과를 분석하고 이를 통해 강의 개선 방안을 도출 하여 궁극적으로는 대학 교양교육으로서 융합교육이 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 제언하였다. 즉 진정한 융합교육이란 학습자에게 융합된 지식 그 자체를 전달하기보다는 학습자가 스스로 융합 적 사고를 할 수 있는 역량을 길러주어야 한다는 점, 다양한 학문을 아우르면서도 내적 일관성 을 갖춘 실라버스를 마련해야 한다는 점, 이를 토대로 교수자는 다양한 교육 내용이 어우러진 융 합 과목이라는 특수성 안에서 학습자에게 교육 내용을 일관되고 균형적으로 전달할 필요가 있 음을 제시한 것이다.
