Despite its attested benefits, ER is still rarely practiced in Korean university settings. One of the realistic difficulties in ER practice is setting up a library equipped with graded readers. Thus, the current study used authentic books of students’ choice instead of graded readers as ER materials and compared their outcomes. The results showed that ER using authentic books improved Korean university students’ reading rate and decreased their reading anxiety although reading comprehension and reading motivation did not increase significantly. Also, the students reported the benefits of ER as development of English reading proficiency, natural exposure to the target language, and increased interest in English language and its culture. The major drawbacks of ER were time lack and unknown vocabulary. In sum, ER using authentic books showed similar positive results as in ER using graded readers. Moreover, it is easier, more fun, and costless to administer than ER using graded readers.

영어 다독의 언어적, 정서적 긍정적인 효과를 증명하는 많은 선행 연구결과에도 불구하고 영 어 다독은 입시에서 벗어난 대학 교육현장에서 조차도 거의 실행되고 있지 않다. 영어 다독 실행 이 현실적으로 어려운 이유 중 하나는 다독 실행을 위해 수준별 도서를 포함한 영어 도서관이 필요하기 때문이다. 따라서 본 연구는 수준별 영어 도서 대신에 영어 원서를 활용하여 교양필수 과목인 영문 독해 수업에서 다독을 1학기 동안 실행하고 그 효과를 수준별 도서를 활용한 다독 의 선행연구 결과들과 비교하여 보았다. 그 결과, 원서를 활용한 다독 역시, 수준별 도서를 활용 한 다독과 마찬가지로 읽기 속도 향상, 읽기 불안 감소, 그리고 학생들의 긍정적인 반응을 이끌 어 낼 수 있었다. 비록 독해 능력과 동기 면에서는 유의미한 향상은 없었고, 시간과 어휘 부족의 문제가 대두되었지만, 수준별 다독에 비해 실행이 매우 용이하고, 재미있고, 비용이 절감되는 장 점 때문에 오히려 영어 다독을 우리나라 대학 영어 교육현장에 보급하는데 큰 기여를 할 수 있 을 것으로 사료된다.
