Unlike in Korea, research on the history of social welfare development in the West has been various and diverse. The most widely known country in the world is the United Kingdom. It is also the country of Beveridge report which is a famous blueprint of the welfare state, and it is also the country which is the first to have the framework of the welfare state through the development of various systems in the form of before and after the industrial revolution. For this reason, research on social welfare development history has been relatively active in this country. In Korea, even research on developmental history is not deep, and it is rare for people to study related figures. Therefore, I would like to give a brief overview of the trends in the study of British social welfare history, focusing on people who influenced the development of welfare state, and try to gain some implications.

국내와 달리 서구에선 사회복지 발달 역사에 대한 연구가 다양하고 다채롭게 이뤄져왔다. 그 가운데 가 장 국내에 널리 알려져 있는 나라는 영국이다. 복지국가의 유명한 청사진인 베버리지 보고서의 나라이기 도 하고, 산업혁명 전후의 성상 속에서 다양한 제도의 발전과 부침을 거치면서 복지국가의 틀을 가장 먼저 갖춘 나라이기도 하기 때문이다. 이 때문에 이 나라에선 사회복지발달사에 대한 연구가 비교적 활 발히 이뤄져왔는데, 특히 이채로운 것은 인물 연구다. 국내에선 발달사 연구조차도 일천한 상황이고 인 물 연구는 더더욱 관련 저서를 찾아보기 드문 형편이다. 이에 영국 사회복지 역사 연구의 동향을 인물 중심으로 개략적으로 살펴보고 나름의 시사점을 얻고자 한다.
