The purpose of this study is to propose directions for research on 'value, necessity and research methods of Korea Social Welfare History.' Korean Social Welfare (hence, KSW) History has not yet been compiled as a whole set, and thus creates historical identity formation problem The issues of 'distortions'' in current KSW history caused by non-social welfare scholars' (ie., church historians etc.) writings, such as selecting KSW historical issues, collection of researech materials, and analysis of the data, which are lacking in historical identity of KSW. Another issue is the fast loss of historical materials of KSW. These are some of the academic and pragmatic reasons for this study. The objective scientific nature of historical study is reviewed, and propose some theories of "historical science", such as 'Synchronische and Diachronische approaches', and a View of KSW History" "For whom KSW history should be researched ?' is the proposed queston for establishing "Historical Consciouness" of KSW historical researchers.

본 연구의 목적은 사회복지 연사연구계의 공통관심인 ‘연구의 가치, 필요성, 그리고 연구방법의 방향성’ 을 제시하는 데 있다. 사회복지 역사는 아직 ‘통사’로서 연구가 되어 있지 않아, 한국사회복지의 역사적 정체성 정립에 문제를 제기하고 있다. 또한 지금까지 연구된 사회복지 자료에서 왜곡된 사실들이 발견 된다. 비전공 사회복지 역사연구자들에 의하여 근대사회복지역사가 연구되어, 사회복지 역사연구의 주제 선정, 사료의 수집과 분석 등에서 사회복지의 역사적 정체성이 결여되어 있다. 또한 사회복지의 일차적 사료가 급속히 상실되어 가고 있다는 사실에서 연구의 가치와 필요성 그리고 방법론 방향 제시의 학술 적, 실용적 배경이 된다. 지금까지 객관성이 결여된 역사연구의 방법을 탈피하기 위하여 ‘역사학’적 학문 기반의 연구이론을 제시하였다. ‘병시적 관찰과 통시적 관찰’ 그리고 ‘사회복지역사관의 정립’등이 그 예 이다. 타 인접학문에 종속되어 있거나 파묻혀 있는 한국사회복지 역사를 독립적으로 연구해야 하며, “누 구를 위한 사회복지 역사연구인가?”의 질문을 중심으로 연구가들의 시대적 ‘역사 의식’ 개발의 필요성을 제시하고 있다.
