This study aims to restructure current moral aspect in 2000s by reviewing the meaning of the ghost narrators which appear in the novels of Yun-SungHee and Hwang-JungEun. From the tales of ghost in traditional tales to recent new media narratives such as films and games, ghost narratives have been understood as return of the suppressed, which cannot be irrelevant to the feeling of ‘resentment.’ It is, however, not possible to find this type of resentment in the novels of Yun and Hwang. Theirs are pleasant and indifferent superficially. But, deep under the pleasantness and indifference, the moral attitude of the novels is paradoxically stated which intervenes the current shocking reality. Different from the convention of novel, their ghost narration accepts ‘contingency’ as one of the essential elements and highlights the aspect of ‘occurrence’ hidden in our ordinary lives through capturing the disastrous ‘accident.’ An ‘occurrence’ is something that compels us to decide a new way of existence. As the novel of Yun changes a simple and contingent accident into a situation of occurrence, it presents an illusion of the real through experience of messianic time which pauses our ordinary lives. In Hwang’s ghost narration, the ghost sometimes transforms into another object or an animal, which are vestiges of ‘otherness’ realized in ‘stubborn faces.’ The encounter with others works as a chance to interrogate about ‘myself’ of ‘me’ and makes the ego reborn as an ‘ethical subject.’ The novel of Hwang shows the ethic of novel to live along with ‘The Other’ by giving ‘names’ to these anonymous people without symbolic language and listening to their stories. Although their novels have been considered at a glance as ‘pleasant fairy tale’ or ‘fantastic narrative’ which are irrelevant to reality, they suggest a position regarding ethic of novels by revealing the phantom of the real through the voice of ghost narrator and introducing a ethical subject which responds to the summon of ‘The Other’ The ethical possibility of Korean novels in 2000s has been newly expanded through them.

본고는 윤성희와 황정은의 소설에 나타나는 유령 화자의 의미를 검토함 으로써 2000년대 한국소설의 윤리적 양상을 구체화하고 그 미학적 스타일 을 확인하고자 한다. 전통 설화의 귀신담에서부터 최근의 영화와 게임 등의 뉴미디어 서사에 이르기까지 유령 서사는 억압된 것의 귀환, 즉 ‘원한’ (resentment)의 감정과 무관하지 않는 것으로 이해되어 왔다. 그러나 윤성희 와 황정은의 소설에서는 이런 종류의 원한 감정을 찾아볼 수 없다. 이들의 소설은 표면적으로 명랑하고 무심하다. 그러나 이 명랑한 무심함의 심층에 는 당대의 충격적 현실에 개입하는 이들 소설의 윤리적 태도가 역설적으로 개진되어 있다. 기존의 소설 관습과 달리 ‘우연성’을 소설의 본질적 요소로 받아들이고 있는 윤성희의 유령 서사는 재난적 ‘사고’의 포착을 통해 우리의 일상에 도 사리고 있는 ‘사건’의 면모를 부각시킨다. 사건이란 우리로 하여금 새로운 존재 방식을 결정하도록 강요하는 어떤 것이다. 단순하고 우연적인 사고를 하나의 존재론적 사건으로 전환시키는 윤성희의 소설은 재현 불가능한 애 도를 드러내기 위한 스타일상의 고심의 산물이다. 이 순간 우리는 우리의 일상을 정지시키는 메시아적 현재시간을 경험하며 순간의 시간성을 확인하 게 된다. 황정은의 유령 서사는 때로 유령으로부터 다른 사물, 혹은 동물로 변형되 기도 하는데, 이 유령・사물・동물 화자는 ‘완고한 얼굴’로 현상하는 ‘타자 성’(Otherness)의 흔적들이다. 이 타자와의 대면은 ‘나’의 ‘나됨’을 심문하는 계기로 작용하며 자아를 ‘윤리적 주체’(ethical subject)로 거듭나게 한다. 황정 은의 소설은 상징적 언어를 소유하고 있지 못한 이 익명적 존재들에게 ‘이 름’을 부여하고 그들의 이야기에 귀를 기울이고자 하는 노력을 멈추지 않음 으로써 타자와 더불어 살아가기 위한 소설의 안간힘을 보여준다. 일견 현실과 무관한 ‘명랑 동화’ 혹은 ‘환상 서사’로 치부되어 온 윤성희 와 황정은의 소설은 유령 화자의 목소리를 통해 실재의 환영을 드러내고 타 자의 소환에 응답하는 윤리적 면모를 보여줌으로써 소설의 윤리에 관한 하 나의 입장을 보여준다. 이를 통해 2000년대 한국소설의 윤리적 가능성이 새 롭게 확장되었다.
