The purpose of this study is to investigate the experience of participating in vocational education and career experiences of middle-aged women with career interruption, and what is the essential meaning of the experience. To do this, we interviewed 6 middle - aged women aged 40-59 years who had experienced career-interrupted for more than 10 years. The in - depth interview data was analyzed and analyzed using the method of Giorgi among the phenomenological research methods. As a result, 10 components and 29 sub-components were derived. As a result of the analysis, the ten components are ‘Resignation without any regrets due to marriage’, ‘Becoming a full time housewife feeling lost oneself’, ‘Hoping to have a new life’, ‘Not easy to seek myself’, ‘Enduring difficulty in seeking myself’, ‘Beginning a new change for me by participating in vocational education’, ‘Opening new chances with having certificates’, ‘Living with a life of self’, ‘Becoming a social member with new relationship’, and ‘Wanting to live for generous myself that can give out.’ Based on the results of this study, we conclude that the essential meaning of middle-aged women who are disconnected from participation in vocational education is ‘Want to live a life that I can find and find myself in my life of losing my self.’ Practical implications were discussed, and implications, limitations and suggestions of the study were suggested.

본 연구의 목적은 경력단절 중년여성의 직업교육 참여와 취업경험은 어떠하며, 그 경 험의 본질적 의미는 무엇인가를 알아보고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 10년 이상 경력단 절을 경험한 40~59세의 중년여성 중 직업교육 참여 후 취업경험이 있는 6명을 대상으로 2회 이상의 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 면담 자료는 Giorgi의 현상학적 방법을 사용하여 분석하였으며, 그 결과 10개의 구성요소와 29개의 하위구성요소를 도출하였다. 분석 결 과 10개의 구성요소는 “결혼으로 미련 없이 퇴사함”, “나를 잃어가는 것 같은 전업주부 로서의 삶을 살게 됨”, “새로운 삶에 대한 바람을 가짐”, “나의 길 찾기가 쉽지 않음”, “나의 길 찾기의 어려움을 견뎌냄”, “직업교육 참여로 변화가 시작됨”, “자격증 취득으 로 가능성이 열림”, “자기가 있는 삶을 살게 됨”, “새로운 관계 맺음으로 사회의 일원이 됨”, “베풀 수 있는 나를 위한 삶을 살고자 함” 으로 드러났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대 로 경력단절 중년여성의 직업교육 참여 경험의 본질적 의미를 ‘자기를 잃어가는 삶에서 당당히 자기를 찾고 나아가 베풀 수 있는 삶을 살고자 함’으로 규명하였고, 이에 대한 학 문적·실천적 함의를 논의하였으며, 연구의 의의와 제한점 및 제언을 제시하였다.
