- The purpose of this paper is to examine how important translator’s background knowledge is in the process of English-Korean translations. This study revealed that background knowledge had a great influence on the degree of understanding a source text and the way of changing the source text into a target text in terms of expressions. According to two-time questionnaire analyses, student translators recognized the importance of background knowledge in translation which allowed them to understand a source text better and make a translation more confidently. The results of the comparative analysis of translation errors and the questionnaire responses indicate the significance of background knowledge in the translation process.
